The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Very good idea...maybe the NO teachers would be grateful for the schools and treat them right...they aren't being used.

There was some indication on this thread yesterday that levels in NO were already higher than the lake - it will be interesting to see now if the water in NO keeps rising, which would indicate a breach in a river levee.

That would make this a whole different ballgame.

Someone said that you cannot use swimming pool chlorine for cleaning drinking water because it has other chemicals in it.

You are correct. Swimming Pool products are usually sodium dichlor or sodium trichlor. They do have added chemicals that I recommend that you do not want to drink if mixed with water.

You need to find products such as sodium hypochlorite (commonly known as liquid bleach), calcium hypochorite or lithium hypochlorite. These products react with the water and form the strong oxidizer hyochlorous acid and the weaker oxidizer, hypochorite ion in the water that kills the bacteria and viruses.

Just to let you know the term "chlorine" is actually a misnomer.

One final point sodium hypochiorite (bleach) will degrade over time. Therefore, you should use the freshest product available.

Take care

I didn't hear Zarrella say why he was leaving, other than his description of horrible conditions and the inability to get access to other parts of the city.

I'm far from an expert..... so I'll just listen on this subject. I just hope they fill these holes and then get the "water" out.

Actually, they said the Lake is receding at 1/2 inch per hour.....

And THAT is because the Lake is flowing into the City.

Can you add this to the next thread article (I think it's probably about time for another thread, no?)

WWL: Jefferson Parish EOC is now requesting private air and sealift (including small boats) to be pressed into service. Persons who have the ability to transport food and water into the area, or have transport craft that can be used to support the effort should contact (504) 349-5360 ASAP.

yes..the HattiesburgAmerican website has a webboard that says people are getting into Hattiesburg via 98.
49 at Seminary is closed; 59 is littered with trees after Meridian and somewhat passable.
NOTE: Gas up in Meridian there is NO GAS in Hattiesburg/Laurel.
