The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

This has perhaps been posted previously; I'm not able to keep up with the thread today.

The Northern Command/Pentagon is coordinating to offer relief to NO.

I wondered what would happen to the colleges down there. Is LSU in NO? What about Tulane? I have been trying to get the Tulane and University of Southern Mississippi (friend works there) websites for 2 days and haven't been able to bring up a thing.

The school may be open, but where are folks going to live? What are they going to do for electricity, etc.? I just heard that it might be 12 weeks before they get anywhere near to normal in NO.

Add (from the "Pentagon Coordinating Katrina Response" thread the Army/Air Force providing helicopters, and the Army Corps of Engineers trying to deal with the breached levees.

Some McGuyver-type improvisation (such as you describe) may have helped stem some of the destruction in NO. I'm afraid, however, that our best and brightest minds are currently tied up in the WOT. Shame they can't be in two places at once...

Hey steve. There was a post yesterday that stated a huge column on the move. Assuming that report to be accurate, is it a problem of blocked roads?

Hah! With talent on loan from Gah-ahd, I mentioned to a family member two nights ago that the MSM was slavering over the fact that the hurricane was a great "equalizer". They were ecstatic that the storm destroyed the homes of the rich as well as the poor.

Class warfare at its finest, of course.

Rush just opened his show today with the same thought.

I would go Rush's cogent comments a step further. If the rich are destroyed, the poor suffer more. Many of the rich in those $500,000 homes on the beach are the go-getters that produce the jobs for the poor.

I've never heard yet of welfare folks creating corporations with thousands of employees collecting pay checks.....unless the jobs they create are in social work or law enforcement.

The MSM is stupid as well as mental.

I heard that but a cutting torch and a bank vault could be a prety big payday for someone.

There must be literally 100,000 safe deposit boxes too. I believe the authorities will get the scum either out or isolated in the next couple days, and restore as much order as can be had in an evacuated, flooded city.

3,500 NG from Memphis were supposed to be on their way last night specifically to restore law & order. They should be there now.

This feels like another 9/11 to me. It's like a whole city has been wiped off the map. Kinda makes me worry about what terrorists might do in the future, and how that is going to affect all of us.

What hasn't been said is that they may NOT be able to repair the levee break, and it's also likely that miles of levess adjacent tot he break may be "loosened" and water is seeping under them...the force of the water rushing to the breech is scouring the bottom nearby..the whole structure is weakened..
