The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

She said that? I find her statement rather difficult to believe.
I saw a video last night on WSDU with people being pulled from a house near the roof, into a boat. They asked to be taken somewhere and were told they were being taken to the superdome. They sat in silence, looked unhappy, and the man told them he was sorry but it was ordered.
The mayor (I use that term loosely) said no such thing.
My cat, in her litter box, would have been more informative.
Oh, you get where you don't even think about them; just prepare for the inevitable.
I know a lot of FReepers don't like Shep, but he doesn't bother me. I haven't seen or heard from him since I've been home from work - any news about what's happening to him or the French Quarter? They were all so smug the other day, perhaps things are not going so well today?
(I did read previous posts, but may have msised this)
Oh .. I didn't know that was Raymond describing taking his baby and 2 other kids. I didn't know he lived in NO... great news, thank God. He's such a wonderful man.
You rock. Compassion has been in short supply today. The AM's even gave me a minor break for a rant against the dregs.
Ya, but if the Mississippi is flowing into the lake, one would think it would go downhill disapating into the lake heading for the gulf rather than uphill into New Orleans. That lake is big. In any event, we don't have any evidence that the river is rushing through the industrial waterway into the lake at warp speed, none at all. And if it were, there would be massive amounts of water pouring from that waterway into the bowls, since the river is 14 feet above sea level, and probably higher at the moment. When I saw the pic from this afternoon, it appeared the water was pouring out of St Bernard/Arubi from a breached levee into the waterway, rather than the reverse.
Has she even looked at the water on TV!
You can see the oil on top and the stuff floating in it!!
The map of contraflow (link) give hints why the entire system wasn't used as contraflow. Most of the contraflow patterns start at major interchanges. As for where the I-10 west starts, my never-on-the-scene guess is that I-10 is reduced to 2 lanes from 3 somewhere around that point.
If this happens again, and the governor says "go to the Superdome", you can bet nobody will go. Not after this nightmare.
Shep isn't familiar with the proverb 'water seeks it's own level'.
I agree but she looks lost.If she has a 2nd in command who is strong they should step in for the media.
We need to consult with a few British veterans of Dunkirk. And getting fifty an hour out to me is better than zero.
So what if the Superdome has a hole in their roof, the Cowboys have been playing with a hole in their roof for years. ;)
Good to know.
Look at those pictures.
What happened to Grand Isle, LA? Is it gone?
I would imagine that FEMA is setting up tent cities right now. They will not only need tents, they will need food facilities and toilets set up. Enough to house an entire city. Not much sense in moving people until they have a place to move them. I would imagine they will begin moving them tomorrow.
> Tell me, how do you think they are going to pump out the bowl without fixing the breech?
Once the water level in NO rises to that of the lake, which it seems to be doing quite rapidly, then there will be no forces of moving water to displace any subsequent breech repairs.
How can they mandatory evacuate the homes & not shoot the looters. The people need to stay to protect their lifetime of memories. Soon they will hit the homes south of the superdome.
