The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.
The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...
Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Suggest you read the Congressional report on the Titanic and the official interviews. Based on the circumstances, the entire crew behaved well right up to the very end. They did a tremendous job saving as many people as they did. Even if they had had enough life boats they would have not had enough time to fill them and launch them. Crew members were giving away their life jackets and warm coats to the passengers. The captain was under total control of the ship even up to the time it actually sunk.
I feel he would only be a distraction right now. He can lead the most effectively from Washington.

There are photos of small craft under power within a few hundred feet of the breech. These 40hp boats are very capable of towing vessels up to 75 ft to the breech area - espcially as the current is going that
way.
The depth of the lake drops to a few feet after the breech and anything towed from the lake will snag there - do this 100 times and you have an effective structure that will become more water tight as weeds,
lumber, etc fills up nooks and crannies.

A long time ago I owned a small marine construction company.
I do not believe I could dam a 20 foot wide creek, of a three foot depth and a walking pace flow rate, even with unlimited funds and preparation, without unwatering the site.
I know what you are feeling.
I'd like to airdrop an aircraft carrier in that hole and stop it cold, but it isn't going to happen.
It just isn't.
New Orleans is going to flood to the specified depth and no amount of hindsite will change it.
There are, however, several other critical variables still in flux.
I want that hole plugged too, but it isn't going to happen, not tonight, and by tomorrow it won't matter.
Current efforts are geared towards getting as many people out of New Orleans as we can, and maybe saving some of the survivors still stranded or trapped elsewhere.
There are a lot of these.
IMO, it is time to consider allocating your priorities to issues that we have the ability to change for the better.
Health guy saying problem with toxic mold, west nile especially for the people on the roof. The toxic mold may be what causes the condemation.
Says everything is very bleak.
Unlike 9/11, there aren't a hell of a lot of people in the affected areas that will be able to hear his words of comfort. I'd much rather see our President lead by action rather than words.

The people who truly need the president's support are in NOLA and on the coast helping....and they have no power to hear what he says....The rest of the country can wait.

Outrage over levees failing? Why? That's just physics.
The levees overran because of water dumped uphill from them. Even water coming close to the top of a soil dam will start to force its way under and through. This is not the first nor the last time it will happen.

Where's that Dutch boy with the spare finger to stick in the dike, when you need him? Seriously though, North Sea storms, bad as they may be, don't compare, I think, to the power and water volume of a tropical hurricane.
I wish I felt proud about that. But just like Shepard Smith was almost gleeful in his assessment of the post-hurricane damage from his limited view in the French Quarter early on, I don't think the news media is doing a good job at all about setting out the real consequences of what happened.
It may be more exciting to show video of a few rescues and some looting, but the real story is how do you evacuate a city of residents that refused to evacuate once before when it was far easier?
Anyone heard any estimates of when the water taps will be back on with safe water? Any estimates of when sewage will be working?
No. These people are wading in a toilet. Someone in the media ought to be asking how long they can do that.
I heard they are STILL taking people to the SD.
