The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

"My father suggested there be an executive order to ban all the "boutique blends" of fuel through this time period."

Great minds thinking alike.... :^) I've been thinking the same thing - can Pres. Bush do it by Exec. Order or would it require an act of Congress? They should tear away all impediments to providing gasoline....

The president is the one who got this lousy SOB of a mayor off the dime to order a mandatory evacuation of NO and I think he is PROVING that the feds had best step in and take it from here.

Two questions regarding GA gas - Do you guys have sales taxes or other hidden taxes (e.g. environmental "fees") on top of the gas tax? Are you in a "boutique gas" are?

Both of those would drive up the price of gas compared to elsewhere.

Damn straight - we are going to be the laughing stock of countries that have been doing this for hundreds of years in the North Sea.

No. They don't have hurricanes.

In terms of economic damage and lives lost, Katrina may turn out to be one of the worst hurricanes in U.S. history.

But the storm actually turned out to be much less powerful than predicted. Meteorologists say a puff of dry air coming out of the Midwest weakened Katrina just before it reached land, transforming a Category 5 monster into a less-threatening Category 3 storm.

The last-minute gust also pushed Katrina slightly to the east of its Big Easy-bound trajectory, sparing New Orleans a direct hit _ though not horrendous harm.

"It was kind of an amazing sequence of events," said Peter Black, a meteorologist at the Hurricane Research Division of the federal government's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory.

I see Notre Dame de Prompte Secour all over it.

I just watched the Mayor on WWL's website. He's blaming "Chain of Command" problems for not fixing this breach first thing this a.m.

He's definitely trying to move the blame game along...away from his administration.

Those choppers should have been in the air this morning. And as for landing strips for transport planes...try the freeways...they are closed to traffic.

I heard on WWL radio early early this moring that the choppers HAD been flying all night Monday night into Tuesday morning.

As for freeways as landing strips - get real. It's a city. Not a Nebraska interstate.

What an assinine statement to make -- the President is flying on AF One on the way back to the WH to coordinate efforts. You want to impeach him for not making a statement to the Nation? Give me a break!

Why don't you impeach the LA Governor and the Mayor for starters if you want to impeach someone?

but he can be impeached or forced to resign

Did you know he's the only President to authorize funds with a storm 2 days out?

Did you know that or do you just have another agenda?
