The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Probably worse, as so many of these people do not have insurance.

Seems like CNN is still really the only 24/7 news channel. The other ones have special shows that also replay late at night.

As the Governor, you have to be a whole lot less emotional than this Governor. She is out of her league and the people of LA need someone with strength right now.

Governor Blanco is way over her head and what is needed are people that understand a disaster and do not get emotional right now. This press conference reveals a Governor that has very little clue on what to do next. Get Rudy.

Or just get Mississippi to temporarily annex Louisiana and let Haley Barbour handle it.

An associate of mine works at WDSU and stayed behind in N.O. while much of the rest of the staff went to Jackson. His wife also stayed behind since she works at Charity Hospital. Any word on how the TV studio or the Hospital are making out ? I'm kind of worried about them.

I posted a long update to a closed thread and wasn't able to retrieve it. Anyway, I'll do it again, but shorter.

For info from the NO area, your best bet is to tune your radio, after dark, to WWL 870 am. It can be picked up nationally after dark.

I listened all through the night last night and learned:

Martial law has been declared in Jefferson Parish through at least Monday morning. After that time, you will only e allowed to enter with proper ID, and will be asked to stay only long enough to survey damage and retrieve belongings.

Slidell has no communication at all, which explains the near news blackout. The St. Tammany govt did manage to get a press release out which stated that the're working and to stay away for now. The release made no mention whatsoever about damages.

People called in to WWl with the following info about Slidell:

Water tower down. Don't know which one.
Old Spanish Trail is now the new shoreline for Lake Pontchartrain.
Very little info still. Sorry.

People called in from mid city saying water was still rising. Turns out there was a two-block section of the 17tj street canal levee broken and water was rushing onto Canal Blvd like a white water river.

People were being advised to get onto their roofs, and not into their attics without axes or crowbars.

Most of hte buildings in teh CBD have every window blown out. NO downtown was described repeatedly as Beiruit with water.

It seems the NO and Slidell area were impacted more severely than the news has been reporting.

Please ping me with any Slidell news, as it looksl ike I wont' be able to return home for weeks.

Please excuse spelling etc. I'm fighting with a counsin's AOL, which keeps trying to cut me off.

Keep us in your prayers y'all. I still don't know what awaits me. My family is safe, so I'm very grateful to God for that.

We could have had Bobby Jindal who had a plan and can think on his feet. Too many people though couldn't get past his East Indian heritage. My lib sister is getting it now. Hopefully others will also.

Very ugly commercial with a closeup of Cindy Sheehan calling Bush a liar and saying that he killed her son, right in the middle of CNN's hurricane coverage.

One word: backfire.

Seems moving them to the Super Dome and then having to move them again later is double work, but if the roads are too bad to leave on, then I can see the point.

It's a staging/logistics move, I think. Moving them to the Super Dome means you only have to open one route out of the city. Same principle as FedEx.

Plus which, you know you've got dry places to put thousands of people, even if it is horrific in there.
