The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Time to:
Give up on pumping.
Stop taking people to SD.
Get the ones in SD out to other cities.
Close the city off.
Start over after all the lives that can be saved are saved.

You have done a great job continuing with the reports here.

Have you all seen the site where people from all over the country are offering their help/rooms/jobs/etc to survivors. It makes you feel so good about our fellow Americans.

The local news just broke the story, but gas stations have been running out all day, and it's been kept hush-hush so as not to cause massive lines.

It seems that a lot of hush-hush is going on. Officials still deny NO is filling up "like a bowl".

Natural gas pipelines took a hit too.

So do the Mods actually sit someplace and have to read all these posts? That would be kinda fun in a sick sorta way. But I admit, I've really enjoyed the sense of humor on FR

Hello,

No, looters are far above anyone that would use this horrific situation to score political points. How about: LOWER THAN HELL.

""DUMB QUESTION TIME - WHERE ARE HELICOPTERS TO DROP 1000LB POLY PLY BAGS OF SAND INTO THE BREECH? WHERE ARE THE EMPTY BARGES TO SINK AT THE BREECH TO DO THE SAME THING???""
"The misunderstood fact is that these items are not just lying around waiting to be used."

Theres a gazillion vessels in the proximity that are not salvageable that can be towed to the breach and scuttled with .50 cal weapons in short order. This in conjunction with sandbags would greatly reduce the inundation of downtown NO

I know a thing or three about this and

Don't discount the fact that everyone is filling up their gas tanks in anticipation of a 20 cent plus price rise. It could well be a distribution shortage as demand spikes artificially. I don't mean to say that we don't have a long-term problem; we do. I hope someone puts a bill on fast track to open ANWR ... no better time to get it passed.

I thank those who are preparing to host Freepers. However, I have to save my space for an older couple in the NOLA area (on the West Bank but downstream too xing far from the I-90 bridge) IF they survived. When I talked to them on Saturday (when Katrina was running as a marginal Cat 3) they were busy filling bottles and putting them into the fridge, bringing back memories of what one of my relatives did during Isabel while I was out of town. Maybe they heeded the mandatory evacuation, maybe they thought it would turn away as so many hurricanes had.

Listen this is for all on the thread. Presently 95% of the refineries are shut down. 25% of the food is is trucked out of LA/Miss area. Gas is going to be rationed. For your best course of action go to the store now and pick up canned meat and fruits and fuel up.

At Pearl Harbor, most of the ships were caught at anchor and the navigation channel was clear. USS Nevada was also far more maneuverable than any barge.

WWL is now relaying that the rescue forces need even smaller boats. Small powerboats, jetskis and such. They are needing to get into smaller areas than the airboats and such can get into. Also, any sealift people can provide would be appreciated.

WWL also reports that the heavy lift choppers they are using to drop bags in the levee gap can only make one drop then have to RTB for fuel. There are no forward operating bases in the city with fuel yet.
