The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

"Laz got a time-out?"

*sigh*

Laz left on his own accord. He'll be back, just see his profile and posting history.

The lake is open to the sea. Someone said it was 9 inches above sea level. The surge is long gone.

Okay. All we need is a verified elevation source to eliminate the Mississippi. Does Bourbon St have water? Roughly 2.5 above sea level there.

CNN - they're calling up (mandatory) 550 reservists to help with SAR. (Didn't say where from)

"CNN had a short piece on teh "Colonial" pipeline that runs from Houston to the east coast. It carries refined products, and it is also out of commission."

Now would be a REAL bad time for the New Madrid fault to let go. It would ruin this pipeline as well as all the others that carry petroleum products from out west to the east. (Some day though....)

This whole thing is reminding me less of an Irwin Allen movie, and more of the last chapter of "The Grapes of Wrath"

"To: NautiNurse

Just a note on flooding and homes.

A flood will soak a house down but after a period of drying out, it can be rebuilt or repaired rather handily. This applies if thee is no current or wave action to move a building off its foundation. So most of the
buildings in NO will be repaired without much trouble, as there doesn't seem to be much flow through city streets. They will probably limit boats to those that are small and have pilots that know how to pilot
through flooded areas.

I know it looks bad, but it is a thoroughly doable situation to get NO back to normal after a drying out period. "

True, with limitations. If you have spare money to invest, companies that make pink fiberglass and sheetrock look good to me.

If they sit under water too long, the studs and sill plates will get beyond salvage...that means a new frame, with only the foundation worth saving.

Don't tell me that Lazamataz wrote an opus and I missed it!

Did not see an opus. Did see him get a bit raunchy; tried to recover, but most likely dug himself deep enough.

This has happened before. He will, I trust, return; and act nice.

Because I'm one of those nosey people and just have to know everything...
What is this about Laz?
and also this:
Should we really be worried that the gas will run out at the pump as far away as Michigan and surrounding northern states. Sorry, I just guess I'm always a day late and a dollar shy...Story of my life.

Hobie Cat sounds good to me--hoping some politicians pick up my idea--e-mailed a dozen or so and FEMA as well.
I know their busy, but while no one can actually work in hard hit areas, it's a perfect time to begin construction on container housing, now!
A 16' or 18' temp. home would suit me better than living under a bridge.
In addition, these container housing units could--should be moved to PUBLIC LANDS, already purchased with our tax dollars!!!.
