NEW ORLEANS (AP) With much of the city emptied by Hurricane Katrina, some opportunists took advantage of the situation by looting stores.

Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement.
"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."

Around the corner on Canal Street, the main thoroughfare in the central business district, people sloshed headlong through hip-deep water as looters ripped open the steel gates on the front of several clothing and jewelry stores.

Looters filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation as National Guard lumbered by.

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

Even a cop joins in the looting

Law enforcement efforts to contain the emergency left by Katrina slipped into chaos in parts of New Orleans Tuesday with some police officers and firefighters joining looters in picking stores clean.

Hurricane Katrina had a plan for the war but not a plan for the peace.
They were not men?
Heavy sigh. Get back at society? I'll bet he's a democrat. Get back for what? And they are wading through the disease ridden water, the polluted water, to steal. When the town is rebuilt and the stores reopen, will they just stroll in as though nothing happened?
Toooo funny, thanks for the link. (2 wks from cannibalism...)
Drama Queens, one and all!
That is an interesting observation.
History is filled with examples of what in more recent times has come to be called slumming.
Upper class people visited Manhattan's notorious Five Points section for amusement, and during the 1930's wealthy people would have hobo parties, where they dressed in ragged clothes and drank out of tin cans and jars.
Much of the attraction of NO is likely based on this fascination that the well to do have with the quaint and bawdy amusements of the poor.
I think society broke down long before Katrina.
As sad as it is I think there comes a point where when you shoot the looter you don't look at race, you don't look at character, you don't try to be politically correcet. You just shoot the bastard and hope you did a good job. He drops dead real clean. Quote me please.
When it comes down to it it is a reason to "get black at society". Really does't work in this watch.
"Where are those heavily-armed Korean shopkeepers when you need them?"
Yeah where are they?
Honestly - I run into more people like you on business trips then I do the wild partiers. I don't travel a lot with my company, but when I do it seems like people have their limits.
From what I recall, after Hurricane Celia in 1970 we had martial law declared immediately after the hurricane passed and a curfew at dark. What's taking the bozo mayor so long to ask the governor to declare martial law?
Yes they are men.
Don't be naive. Here's the Reuters' headline tomorrow.
It's Bush's Fault!
Do you recall this list a couple of weeks ago?
Americas 25 Most Liberal Cities
(in descending order)
1 Detroit Michigan
2 Gary Indiana
3 Berkeley California
4 Washington, D.C.
5 Oakland California
6 Inglewood California
7 Newark New Jersey
8 Cambridge Massachusetts
9 San Francisco California
10 Flint Michigan
11 Cleveland Ohio
12 Hartford Connecticut
13 Paterson New Jersey
14 Baltimore Maryland
15 New Haven Connecticut
16 Seattle Washington
17 Chicago Illinois
18 Philadelphia Pennsylvania
19 Birmingham Alabama
20 St. Louis Missouri
21 New York New York
22 Providence Rhode Island
23 Minneapolis Minnesota
24 Boston Massachusetts
25 Buffalo New York
If you placed any one of these "liberal" cities in this same situation, you'd have looting, lawlessness, etc. The "opressed minorities" in these cities are pacified only so long as the government keeps the handouts coming. If that flow of income is threatened, you'll get what we see in New Orleans today. Liberal politicians are the leaders of a parasitic underclass. That's why they oppose measures that would lead people up and out of the underclass. It erodes their power base. The power of liberalism ultimately comes from the fear that these people will rise up and slit our throats.
However - the candor is much appeciated.
Very telling.
You are WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!! I lived in SF for the '89 earthquake and in Seattle for the '01 earthquake, and in both cases, looting was minimal.
