NEW ORLEANS (AP) With much of the city emptied by Hurricane Katrina, some opportunists took advantage of the situation by looting stores.

Denise Bollinger, a tourist from Philadelphia, stood outside and snapped pictures in amazement.
"It's downtown Baghdad," the housewife said. "It's insane. I've wanted to come here for 10 years. I thought this was a sophisticated city. I guess not."

Around the corner on Canal Street, the main thoroughfare in the central business district, people sloshed headlong through hip-deep water as looters ripped open the steel gates on the front of several clothing and jewelry stores.

Looters filled industrial-sized garbage cans with clothing and jewelry and floated them down the street on bits of plywood and insulation as National Guard lumbered by.

"To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society," he said.

IF the MSM applies the same standards to NO as they are to Bagdah, they will expect ther city to be rebuilt by Halloween, and all US aid workers pulled out..
The culmination of a liberal education..........
First off, it's "martial law". Second, martial law has NOT been declared for NO - just dusk to dawn curfew. Lastly, the police and Nat'l Guard have more important issues than looter to deal with right now.

Aw, cum'on folks....Gary, Ind. and Detroit City and ----aw forget it....
The world is becoming more and more of an Ayn Rand novel.
Hard to post the comments that come to mind, and avoid a timeout for being excessively rude. Your signal sez it all.
Even Vic and Nat'ly coulda seen this comin'...
We watched footage this morning of a grocery store being looted. They were thinking that, too.
Every picture tells a story, don't it?
And these pictures speak volumes, they should be shot. Urban terrorist thugs, too stupid to evacuate, too ig'nint to know right from wrong, and born without morals.
Shoot looters on sight.
Shoot them in the day.
Shoot them in the night
Shoot them to kill.
Shoot them for a thrill.
Shoot them in the head.
Shoot them 'til their dead.
Shoot them.
"Looters get shot....ACLU comes in...."
Shoot the ACLU.
MARTIAN LAW
Quite a quote. Depressing, although not terribly surprising.
That kind of attitude is hurting these "oppressed" people more than anything "society" could have done . . .
There are several cities that could vanish instantly and nobody would miss.
You see, that's part of the big problem here? Most everyone should have gotten out when warned repeatedly. Now the police are tied up rescuing these people that should have left.
Looters are like locust if left alone. They'll take everything that hasn't been damage, and will even take the damaged stuff too. Including hospital fixtures, emergency supplies, water that should be allocated, now reports of gun stores are being looted, etc.
Who's going to shoot them the black cops.
Some tourists were stuck down there. They couldn't get out in time. I remember Foxnews stating that several tourists came to them that couldn't speak English very well and asked them if they were there to shoot a movie. They had no idea a hurricane was on the way and it was only hours before Katrina hit.
New Orleans is very dirty and filled with beggars and vagrants. Frankly I am (was) surprised at how much Convention business they book. Our company has had a couple meetings down there but once you go you really don't want to go back - for business anyways.
I hope justice gets served in the end. If they took food and water, I wouldn't be so upset, and I don't begrudge them nice things. It's just disgusting that people will take advantage in situations like this.
Sure these businesses can write it all off as loss, but we will all pay for it in the end.
