Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

That is a big deal - it wasn't flooded before

I know, this is terrible! 9" sounds like a lot to me in terms of water in my house! Are they going to start removing people from the Superdome now (by boat I suppose??) or have they already? Or are they just moving them UP inside the dome?

These are dirt poor people, as poor as it gets living in the bayou that haven't seen a new pair of shoes in maybe years. This was inevitable.

What about all the rain which will fall in the Ohio Valley and empty into the Mississippi again?

The system is moving quickly enough to where it won't dump extreme amounts of rain over a large area.

I don't think the Mississippi is going to be a problem. Lake Ponchatrain is flooding the city all by itself.

It's significant to me. The rest of the city and surrounding area is under deeper water. We had heard that "80 percent" was under water. I'm thinking the Quarter might have been the 20.

Media is hyping the looters.

They have increased these reports immensely since yesterday.

As folks were piling into the Super dome on Sunday, many said they were there because they didn't have vehicles or other transportation.

Some of the aged or disabled may have decided to take their chances by staying in their homes. I was obviously a bad decision. The estimates are that 80% of the city left with horror stories about the roads being jammed, etc.

It's obvious that there were a lot of able bodied looters who stayed, perhaps for that reason... I have not sympathy for them.

I know where you're at saying this, but it would be political suicide. America's getting a wake-up call over the next couple days, and we need that to happen.

Some levies have been breached and are leaking water into the city and flooding is occurring where it had not been before. This is a concern because it is limiting access to and out of the city.

Well, as long as they are above the floodwaters, they are probably better off in those hi-rise apartments until the rescue/evac capacity increases. They should still have food, and, while not perfect, a better sanitary situation, more room, a place to lay down, and whatever first aid/medicine they have.

Sorry that ya'll are having to go through this stressful situation and lack of communication, plenty of prayers going out for you and them. Hang in there.

So they can fill the gap in hours. But when are they going to start?

They'd probably get a lot of grief using helicopters to fill a levee breach when there are people who need to be lifted out, unless the helicopters in question are unsuitable for human transport.
