Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Even after what we saw in the Indian ocean, people ignored what the water could do. It's all very very sad.

I think it may have been her that put in perspective that these people in the Bayou are a good 5 miles away from the Superdome - that's far away for them on foot. It's all relative to someone's world, but it must have seemed difficult to accomplish.

"Yeah. I thought they may have avoided the worst-case though"

Me too, I was amazed, never thought levies could withstand cat 4 huricane, guess we were both fooled, just took a little longer for the levies to fail.

I do see the cruise ships as being a peice of the puzzle here. If not for rescue, for ongoing housing.

At the cost of at least $500 per person per week, that won't work. Tent cities would be way cheaper.

Patient in insulin shock....

Riverside Hilton in Downtown NO 6th floor.

The shortwave net has not been able to contact the New Orleans Police.....US Coast Guard is online, and they are plucking people out of the city.

I don't understand evacuating to the Superdome....they already had someone jumping out the building to their death...there's no a/c...it's hot in there...non-functioning (I thought I read) bathrooms.......how soon before the state/Feds bring in hospital ships?

I can't get over the difference between yesterday's TV coverage and today's reports. This is for all the annoying talking heads who kept babbling about how New Orleans "dodged a bullet" -- time to eat your words, y'all:

KALB's feed from MSNBC is over for now. "Days Of Our Lives" was delayed for an hour and, while that may seem extremely trivial to many of you, trust me, Alexandria is a *hard-core* "Days" town, no exaggeration. Everywhere you look in Alexandria and Pineville, TV monitors are ON at 12:30 pm! No way they were gonna pre-empt it, but the hour delay certainly underscores the catastrophic nature of things here.

We're talking about two different things here. Rescue operations and disaster relief are certainly important functions, but nothing a government can do is more effective than what people can do for themselves. In this case, I'm talking specifically about advance warnings and informing people about the dangers they face.

You can call me cruel if you'd like, but as far as I'm concerned someone who refuses to evacuate a disaster area and then climbs on a roof expecting to be picked up by a helicopter is not a "victim" in any sense of the word -- he/she is a public menace who is putting other lives at risk through their own ignorance, stupidity, arrogance, etc.

Anybody know where the intercoastal waterway is? They're saying that's where a big breach is.

OMG..they are moving 500 or so patients from vaious hospitals, including critical care patients, to the Superdome in NO.

The water is rising so fast, their generators can't keep up with it.

They say they can't take them out by Helicopter. So they will take them out by boat.

The hospitals evacuated are:

Charity Hospital

VA Hospital

University Med. Center

Tulane Hospital

The lower of those two pics is actually 'down-canal' from the upper one, i.e. closer to downtown NO>

"CNN Producer saying the conditions in Super Dome are getting bad...confusion, heat and things are breaking down."

I am really surprise that authorities have so little ability to handle these situations. With all the ships, helicopters, and military equipment I cannot understand why these people are not already mostly evacuated. This is a lesson in itself.

Prepare yourself to be self sufficient in a time of disaster. Have a plan. Do not rely on the government to help you.

That they may well catch, indeed.....of course, there's always the gators out in the waters... (I shouldn't talk like that)....darn it...it's just wrong that they're pillaging like this. They're degrading themselves...and our Country.

The Coast Guard rescues are incredible, thank goodness the military are now involved in getting these poor folks to safety!
