Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

"Louisiana Offshore Oil Port refining terminal declared there is no major damage. Are there other
encouraging stories showing better than expected damage to oil asstes?"

Great news!

Your buddy Hank was floating around earlier. May still be here.

New Orleans is gone. The toxic contamination from upstream petrochemical facilities will turn reclamation of its existing site into a 10-year+ job, which won't happen given all the other claims on rebuilding.

The French Quarter might be salvaged and enclosed in very high levees as a historical & tourist site, but IMO the rest of the city will be rebuilt, if at all, in some new location where overall rebuilding costs will be lower given both decontamination costs and the necessity of securing the site against repetitions of such flooding.

Thanks for creating the link, but I want to refrain from that subject until evacuations are over for everyone in harm's way (just had to vent, sorry). When folks are safe, we can figure out how to avoid this again.

I told someone this morning that we needed about 40 days and nights of this stuff to make up for the drought this summer.

That is true....I don't know...perhaps I shouldn't question something if I myself haven't been in the situation...

Of course, I wouldn't...I would have been gone..somehow.

I saw a report on another thread that 2 people died going BACK to their house in Slidell, after evacuating and surviving.

I don't know...I think I am better off not assuming how I would act/react given the same circumstances.

Sunday, late afteroon or evening, I was either watching Fox or reading New Orleans news online. The article read, or announcer said, "All schools in New Orleans will be closed Monday and Tuesday."

My daughter and I just looked at each other in disbelief!

I always wonder what we'd do and if our EOC would flood in the event of a major storm...our city EOC is downtown near 8th street and 4 ave south.

Guess where New York City's EOC was located until 9/11.

There's always a second way, if the will is there.

Local reporter is trapped in NO and reprting on local tv. She is very upset. Says sewage is backing up into superdome.

She is at a hotel near the dome. She sounds like she is in such shock.

Not at all. The National Hurricane Center et al as late as Saturday night had this storm centered on Mobile/Pensacola.

COMPLETELY WRONG.

The last time the NHC track landfall was east of Mobile was 11AM Friday. At 5PM Friday the landfall was shifted to Eastern Mississippi, and at 11PM Friday the landfall was shifted to New Orleans, where it remained every advisory till landfall.

For whatever reason mythology about the NHC tracks being more wrong than they were seems to grow up after every storm.

she said Hattiesburg is devastated, according to the MS radio stations.

I'm very glad to hear onyx is fine!

It's frightening to hear that Hattiesburg is devastated. My cousin did find out my aunts survived in Purvis (12 miles SSW), and the house is still standing, but no other info yet. Scary.

The lady anchor on Channel 6 out of NO went after the MSM and people like Shep that didn't know the city and reported they dodged a bullet when damage is worse then they expected.

Time for Shep to go IMHO for his coverage.

much worse then the MSM are reporting.

It's almost like the press can only see as far as the end of its collective nose.

This time yesterday the general concensus was New Orleans dodged a bullet.

The only one who spouted this crap were Shep Smith and Phil Keating on Fox News.

"Those two morons should never be allowed to cover another hurricane."

NOW IF THE HURRICANE WAS OVER ARUBA WE WOULD OF HAD INDEPT COVERAGE. WE WOULD KNOW HOW THE HOLLAWAY FAMILY CAME THROUGH IT.
