Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Which means that everything that was in the sewer lines was pushed into the Superdome ahead of the floodwaters.
They have 48 hours to get everyone out of there. 72 max before serious disease outbreaks happen and folks start going insane.
I've seen reports from Hattiesburg on wjtv.com from Jackson, MS.
I lived through Fredrick as a teenager in Mississippi, this is at least 10 times worse.
Thankfully, with the trees going down and the flying debris, Hattiesburg has not reported any fatalities so far.
This is ultimately going to be worse than Galveston 1900.

The problem here is with chemical contamination more than bacterial. Chemical can cause liver and kidney failure. They are not detoxified by bleach or water purification tablets.

I was watching and saw that too. Her name is Sally Ann Roberts, a longtime WWL anchor. Perhaps its bad, but I'm hoping upon hope that maybe she has been waiting to hear from family and finally has.

I'll tell you what. If people expect some kind of major evacuation process to be put into action in New Orleans every time a hurricane makes its way into the Gulf of Mexico, then we may as well get close the entire city up and move the residents somewhere else -- because a city can't function like that.

Oh man.....You know, as each hour goes by, it's occurring to me this area, the people that opted to say, the government, authorities, no one had it together here.
On the Superdome, I sure hope they have a lot of National Guard on hand. Otherwise, if this report is true, it's going to get real ugly, real fast.

KALB just interviewed the DHH doctor who heads up the Rapides Parish Health Unit. I think his name was Dr. John Naponick (sp?). He gave a very detailed list of potential health hazards, everything from the items you mentioned to stuff like chainsaw accidents and snakebites and then some. Remember that if someone is forced to climb to a rooftop, that the snakes and rats are heading upstairs, too, so you're not even safe on top of your building. And just imagine having wounds on your body and then being forced to march through infected floor waters, yech. The doctor didn't want to stay on air very long because he wanted to get back to treating people at the shelters. I thought he came across as a very thoughtful physician who has given the matter careful consideration.
a couple of things for people still interested in facts and not sensationalism...
slidell is not "gone" abc was doing a report from slidell during the storm and left after....yes its flooded...but its not "gone".....the western eyewall grazed the city.....but winds werent strong enough to level a city.
8000 people died in galveston....anyone thinking this will remotely approach this is wrong......while it looks horrible in new orleans and no doubt there are deaths the flood was a relative "slow rise" event.
