Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Saw that. What was that about? She said "my God" and yanked off her headset.

Wait for the disease indeed. Old-fashioned wrath-of-God stuff like typhus and dysentery and giardia and cryptosporidia.

Good Lord!

Outside of the White House, FEMA, a few here and not many others, the scope of this has yet to be comprehended.

The media is just now figuring out that the bullet New Orleans "dodged", hit the Mississippi shore. They have yet to grasp that it then ricocheted back and is now in New Orleans again.

Be prepared for shocks today and tomorrow. Try to keep a positive attitude. No matter the damage, fear and panic will not help. This is the United States, and we will see this through.

"The weather coverage on FOX has always been terrible, their coverage of this storm could be the beginning of the end of their supremecy in Cable News."

Fox is in trouble as long as it continues to allow Shepard Smith to cover major events. They should sack him and hire John Siegenthaler away from MSNBC.

Anyone watching the livestream of WWL? It appears that Sally Ann Roberts, one of the anchors, has had her own emergency. And is walking off the set. God be with them. Please keep me posted of any Slidell news, please...

What is your opinion about the helicopters dropping 3,000 pound sand bags on the levee...will it work/help?

Basic hydrology indicates that by the time they get the sandbags in place, the lake and city water levels will have just about equalized.

Fixing the breech only allows pumping to begin at some point in the future. It will not halt complete flooding to lake level.

Oh No! My dad was supposed to leave Long Beach and go to Hattiesburg...I have heard nothing from him since Saturday

Prayers for your dad.

All I'm going on is that Howlin spoke with onyx ealier (who is ok thank God), and onyx indicated that - Lots of trees stripped and down, but no major damage. at least at her house; she said Hattiesburg is devastated, according to the MS radio stations.

My dad couldn't get ahold of his sisters, but found out they survived (in Purvis, 12 miles SSW of Hattiesburg). Not much info other than a couple trees hit the house, but the important thing is they're alive.

Hope you here from your dad soon, but realize communication is difficult now.

Checking there is a report on radioreference.com, that the New Orleans area trunked system is down...which would explain why news is scarce.

This person quoted Fox News.

I presume even if they start now, it will take hours to get it truly plugged.

As fast as the water is rising, it won't make much of a difference whether they fix it or not.

Didn't we know about this since the middle of the night? Why was nothing done?

Keep watching the world. One of my side concerns is that an enemy (foreign or domestic) will try to pull something while we are justifiably gazing at our national navel.

My fear as well.
