Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

I was thinking since we have many days ahead of us with these threads that maybe 3 different threads should be set-up, one for each of the 3 states involved.

what I never understand is that if WE, sitting here at our keyboards days in advance, can figure some of this stuff out, why in the world can't the people who are PAID to figure this stuff out can't figure it out.

The same thing happened with the Shuttle. They spent two years trying to fix a problem - that was solvable just by switching back to the friggin' old foam. You knew it. I knew it. 98 percent of FR knew it. This isn't a difficult concept - go back to what worked. But they couldn't bring themselves to do the obvious because they are programmed to not think outside the box any longer. And now the fleet is grounded again.

Government has gone from the can-do attitude of WWII and space exploration in the 1960s to a "we can't do it" attitude we see today. They don't think outside the box, they work every day on making the box even more impervious to new ideas. And it's rife everywhere. I hate to digress on this thread, but it's the same symptom we see with Jamie Goerlick on the 9-11 Commission. Or Congresscritters offering a choice with Social Security reform between the government keeping the IOUs or us keeping the IOUs - without bothering to save that money and avert an entitlement shipwreck that any sane person sees coming.

Throw in the Clinton cover-ups. And Rathergate. And 9-11 itself and the intel failures. And now this fiasco.

It is beyond my comprehension. It looks more and more like what Rome must have looked like before the barbarians came. And it is becoming more lethal with each passing year - and apparently no one friggin' cares.

I'm just watching the video on WWL. They were showing people they were rescueing from the flooded houses. They showed a poor old man they were helping out of the boat. He was dressed in just a tshirt and his underwear. He looked so tired and so sad. It just brought tears to my eyes. How many people thought the worst was over and laid down to sleep and then woke up to their houses inundated with water?

We got your back. Hopefully everyone has had some rest. There will be unsettling disclosures today and tomorrow, but the heat in here should ease after that.

What about the hospital ship we sent to Indonesia after the tsunami?

Right!

If we can send ships other countries, we can send them to NO!

I saw that this morning. I just sat there and sobbed. The poor man and his kids appeared to be in shock. I'm not sure the reporter was faring much better.

This time yesterday the general concensus was New Orleans dodged a bullet.

The only one who spouted this crap were Shep Smith and Phil Keating on Fox News.

Those two morons should never be allowed to cover another hurricane.

KALB (Newchannel 5 Alexandria) has exclusive Coast Guard videos now being broadcast on the 12 noon news program. It's aerial footage and really scary stuff, everything submerged. The Coast Guard chose the Louisiana Convention Center in Alexandria as their headquarters.

Not at all. The National Hurricane Center et al as late as Saturday night had this storm centered on Mobile/Pensacola.

Actually, you are wrong:

To: Howlin

For future reference, this repeated line by the mayor and governor that "We went to bed Friday night being told it was a Florida storm, and woke up Saturday to find us threatened" to excuse why they waited so long to start the evacuation plan is total bullshit. (excuse my French)

Friday 4pm NO time report from the NWS, warns of a significant shift west, Mississippi landfall (88.5 on the grid, NO is 90), and possible more movement expected (post #388):

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1471043/posts?page=388#388

By at least Friday 6pm computer models were converging on LA (post #478):

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1471043/posts?page=478#478

Turns out those computer models had been run at 2pm (post #526):

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1471043/posts?page=526#526

In fact some computer models run at 7am NO time Friday had predicted a NO hit(post #224):

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1471043/posts?page=224#224

So unless the gov and mayor went to bed Friday afternoon, they knew then that it likely was headed their way.

But wait, lookee here, Blanco declares a state of emergency about 8pm Friday night. Why do that if they were told it was going to be a Florida hurricane? (post #585)

NO being emergency evacuated by those who can leave. People are starting to panic. 80% of NO under water.

Martial law declared. Agents put on borders of LA so no one can get in except those who are helping. Lots of looting. Bodies floating by Super Dome.

The only place I know that thought that was FOX and Shep Smith. I have always been a fan of them in the past, but I hope he is canned for his reporting on this storm.
