Hopefully I am way off but I told my mom today that I thought the death toll would hit 1,000+ - she doesn't think so.

FOX has been showing and elderly lady that was put in a basket and flown out by helicopter. They must have pulled her from her flooded home. She looked ok but it shows how many elderly may have not been able to get out.

Good site of pics

I think there will be a frightening death toll ..if we ever find out how many have perished. I think it will take awhile to determine the full extent of the loss.

Never mind those that foolishly stayed in NO and didn't leave, I'm sure a lot of those folks in the bayous and back country didn't leave .. even getting to them will take awhile. This is an historic storm, sadly IMO.

Shante Gruld carries Janeka Garner, 5, to safety after they were rescued from their flooded home by boat in New Orleans, Monday Morning, Aug. 29, 2005. The area was flooded after Hurricane Katrina hit the area. Officials had called for a mandatory evacuation of the city, but many resident remained in the city.

===================================================

God Bless the compassionate sailors .. I also heard there was a sportsmen's club whose members were taking their boats out and going up and down the streets, hoping to rescue stranded residents. May God always bless them with gentle seas and happy lives ... they're angels.

I caught part of that rescue replayed on Fox or Cnn. It was remarkable. The house looks like it's listing off to the right in that shot, it seems the boat got to them in the nick of time. It must have seemed like eons waiting on the roof in the storm and it's aftermath hoping to be rescued. The Dome damage is extensive. But those lucky folks inside were spared and somewhat dry.
