Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

Per WWL--

alternate route to Baton Rouge is gridlocked (Airline Highway); now taking 5 hours to get out of N.O. Late leavers now encouraged to try I-10 again while contraflow is still allowed (until 4:00 P.M. CDT).

I don't see any of the forecasters talking about it going west. However, when you look at the satellite imagery, you still don't see that turn to due north, maybe something will change and it will continue west, far enough to make a difference.

I'm beginning to question the CW as well. Perhaps Katrina is so powerful that the factors which normally steer hurricanes will not be as effective with this storm. Perhaps it's going to slice through Louisiana from east to west until it finds a strong enough counterforce.

I get the same feeling, uncharted territory. This is the first time in history where we have the instrumentation to actually measure what is going on with a storm of this magnitude.

I'm pretty sure that is what the guy said. Founding Father, did you hear that part?

I wish someone would invent a way of keeping food cold that didn't require either electricity or a gas powered generator.

Einstein did; it's based on a mixture of three relatively common chemicals and has no mechanical parts.

Electrolux holds the patents.

Due to the hurricane, no cheers, unfortunately.

You know now that I think about it I don't think so, it was the flood of '94, I had 6 foot of water in my beer joint at the time.

I'm not surprised there - Shep made sure he would be in the middle of this.

"I really like Shep. Hope he has a fast exit outta there."

I hope so too, although he's not one of my favorite people on Fox. He thinks he's God's gift to women.

"The eye wall is how small?"

I could have sworn that the Weather Channel (earlier this morning) reported the eye as being upwards of 50 miles in diameter.

I know it was in '94 because of the ages of my children, but we have so many floods and tropical storms I don't remember which is which.

I understand - I've got some cousins who are on the 7th floor of an apartment building west of New Orleans; I'm praying they get out instead of trying to stay.
