Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

The winds of Katrina are Tornado force, and over a huge area. Even concrete buildings could be destroyed with the sustained winds.

I bet it can lift more than can fit in. Picked this up off a website somewhere. "Disaster relief may involve the airdrop of hay bales to flood stranded cattle or the evacuation of civilians from flooded towns as occurred at Katherine in the Northern Territory in 1997." Still nothing on how many the thing will hold. Let's say 300 people (same as a jumbo and standing room only).

480,000 divided by 300 = You are correct, All of them!

Will the Superdome get any flooding?

I suspect the entire ground level will be under water.

They will literally be on a island.

"My guess is that at least 100,000 people will remain in the extreme danger zone, maybe twice that amount. None of them will wish that they had."

The super dome can hold about 100,000 people in a pinch, and is 25 ft. above sea level. Unless the winds blow it down, unlikely since it is constructed of concrete and steel, they should be alright during the storm.

The problems will come afterwords when they have to evacuate 100,000 people because the rest of the city is flooded with sewage infected water and with no electricity and will stay that way for weeks. Cleaning up NO is going to be a mess.

"Is Shep Smith suicidal?"

Maybe not, but the guy, "Sam", he is interviewing in the bar, drinking a frosty one, is certainly suicidal...

He's just whistling past the graveyard.

Glad you survived. The news makes this storm sound Biblical in its impact.

I'm surprised with the severity of this storm, that the cable channels haven't been hyping it for days, the way they have milked the other hurricanes. Were they caught offguard?

We are having light rain now. It's a sick feeling when you see the outer bands on your local weather station.

I know what you mean. Hour after hour watching the radar blips on the screen, hoping against hope for a turn away from your location. Nowhere to go--so everyone keeps fixated staring at the screen. It's horrible. My prayers are with you.
