FEDS VOW TO GET TOUGH ON ILLEGALS Tue Aug 23 2005 17:15:30 ET
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, acknowledging public frustration over illegal immigration, said Tuesday that the federal government's detention and deportation system must be fundamentally restructured.
"We have decided to stand back and take a look at how we address the problem and solve it once and for all," Chertoff said during a breakfast meeting with reporters.
The NEW YORK TIMES is planning a front page placement for the Chertoff comments on Wednesday, newsroom sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.
The unusually blunt assessment by the nation's top immigration official comes after governors in New Mexico and Arizona recently declared a border-related "state of emergency," citing a surge in smuggling and violence associated with the steady flow of illegal immigrants.

Yeah, but it's the SOLUTION, the COUNTER to the concern that is the important and quite significant thing here.
Homeland Security (Chertoff, Bush, et al.) can simply eliminate a border security issue and call that solution. Just as Bush seems to think a "guest worker program" won't create millions upon millions and ongoing more illegal aliens in the U.S.. Ooops, in Bush speak, that's "guest workers."
Bush seems to think that just renaming the problem solves the problem. You can't have a "guest worker" who is guaranteed to return home to where he/she originated if you have no process to force/compel their return after their "guest" stay has expired.
We NEED THAT PROCESS before any such "guests" arrive or are renamed already here before any such process can even begin to be discussed without bursting out laughing/crying at the preposterousness of the language involved.
It's all about practical measures. If the U.S. does not have: (1.) secure borders [means SECURE, does not mean arguable under various circumstances]; (2.) effective penalties in place to punish and deter those who violate the secure borders; and, (3.) well moderated, staffed and moderated border barriers for foot/vehicle traffic violations of those secure borders, then we might as well just lay it all down as an issue.
The Chertoff statements don't imply a solution but an appeasement. I do think what he's implying is that they're going to implement a "guest" pass to anyone anytime anyplace at any border point just to not have to deal with that "impossible to monitor" border, as Bush calls it.
We need a secure border FENCE/BARRICADE/WHATEVERYOU CALL IT on the Southern Border, which will stop a certain amount of illegal aliens entering the country immediately, and then we can turn attention to include the northern and coastal issues.
We have to stem the problem first at the Southern Border with some barricade that is not surmountable and staff it, just get that done (question should be being asked here, as to why it has not been), and then contend with the others.

Seriously, how do we as citizens make guilty politicians "pay" for refusing representation on this issue?
I don't have a clue since the voting options tend to narrow us down to voting for one of two who both refuse representation on this issue, and by not voting, they get what they want: more reason not to represent.
I'd be interested in practical solutions because I'm in CA and even the so-called conservatives in office are ineffective on this issue. In fact, certain loud-spoken so-called conservatives in Southern CA endorsed the LaRaza mayor of L.A., Villiarosa.
And ridicule Tancredo, for starters, and people of his opinions.

P.S., this thread: I voted for President Bush and my political party affiliation is Republican, just for reference.
There was the "John and Ken" solution they proposed against David Dreyer last year, but I'm not prepared to vote for the Tweedledee Party just to punish the Tweedledum Party...not yet anyway...
Somewhere out there, as I think Ed Rollins recently suggested, there're the people, the money, the motivation, and the organizing power to form a third party that could make a real difference on illegal immigration---if not to win elections, at least to scare the major parties, and in particular the Republicans, enough to get something seriously done on illegal immigration. It's less and less of a pipe dream, I assure you. Some sort of "Citizens' Party" is on the horizon.
I don't think we can trust the Republicans on their own to reform on the issue, Tancredo or no Tancredo.
The alternatives are so much worse: voting for Democrats, who will likely be just as or more insincere about promises of immigration law enforcement as Republicans, stepped-up "vigilanteism" (as you-know-who likes to call it), or active citizen resistance, such as boycotts and picketing of scofflaw businesses, targeted litigation, and...well...who knows what further...
Our country is going down a bad route because of the illegal alien invasion. It'll get even worse for all of us if politicians don't develop some real responsiveness on the issue. Even if all we can do at present is have all the incumbents, especially the Republican incumbents who have betrayed patriots of their party on this issue, worried about retaining their seats next election, it'll be a damn good start.

I did happen to catch that devolve, and was glad to hear him saying it. I believe he said it was costing us a BILLION a year for all the illegals in prisons.

Scratch what I wrote above and donate to Jim Gilchrist, like Janet suggested. He's one of those "vigilantes" that are even less welcome at the White House (and here at FR) than Tom Tancredo. He's running to replace the namby-pamby organization man Chris Cox in my congressional district. If he does succeed, it'll shake up the Tweedledum and Tweedledee Parties on illegal immigration and the borders like practically no other event. God bless Jim Gilchrist and the Minutemen!
