FEDS VOW TO GET TOUGH ON ILLEGALS Tue Aug 23 2005 17:15:30 ET
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, acknowledging public frustration over illegal immigration, said Tuesday that the federal government's detention and deportation system must be fundamentally restructured.
"We have decided to stand back and take a look at how we address the problem and solve it once and for all," Chertoff said during a breakfast meeting with reporters.
The NEW YORK TIMES is planning a front page placement for the Chertoff comments on Wednesday, newsroom sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.
The unusually blunt assessment by the nation's top immigration official comes after governors in New Mexico and Arizona recently declared a border-related "state of emergency," citing a surge in smuggling and violence associated with the steady flow of illegal immigrants.

It will take SERIOUS ACTION, not more BS. The GOP's dwindling conservative base won't be as easily placated this time because they're fed up with Bush's "compassionate conservatism".
Lip service until proven otherwise!
Everyone on the board can voice their displeasure on this issue by sending Jim Gilchrist some money. He is running to replace Chris Cox out here in The OC.
"compassionate conservatism" is a misnomer, as conservatism is already compassionate.
If they don't do anything, people complain, now that they are starting to address the problem and do something, instead of applauding, that better late than never, you are screaming your head off and criticizing.
I'd be hiding too if I'd published that little gem.
In the past three years not only has the problem gotten dramatically worse under Bush's administration but it has principally been Bush's own personal pronouncements that has created the slippery slope. Not only have Bush's pronouncements given hope to Mexico's poor, which has fueled the rush north but his attitudes now leave most to conclude that he'll "solve" the problem by accepting all who can make it.
Tom Ridge presided over one of the largest economic assaults against our country by a foreign government in our nation's history. In the past three years illegal immigration from Mexico has bankrupted California and threatens the availability of a social safety net in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Mexico's policy encouraging illegal emigration into the US threatened the economic stability of our republic and Ridge did absolutely nothing to stop it.
BTTT
But they WILL get burned, because they WON'T do anything, and the illegals will just KEEP COMING.
Until we make the politicians PAY...GRIEVOUSLY... for winking at this invasion for so long.
Thank you, I'm glad to hear that we agree after all. :-)
You took the words right out of my mouth.
Yeah, my sentiments, exactly.
I get the dreaded feeling that the D.C. idea of "solution" will be spending more of those billions from Bush's Transportation bill to build yet another large "corridor" to and from Mexico...thus, problem of any barricade solved! No barricade! Open access! ComeonIIINNNNNN!
Who believes this...anyone, anyone?
Who believes this...anyone, anyone?
Bump! Things look like they are changing a bit....good news!
People on the other side will find some way to abuse those "critter holes," as in, pushing through bombs, incindiaries, whatever. If the "Mexican" threat is to ugly-up the Mexican side of a wall with uglyolegraffitti (who cares), then they'll be looking for other means to vandalize, to state the obvious.
Interesting that they'd resent a wall and not express years of gratitude for all the free stuff.
Good point, and easy to forget.
