SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- Phil Mickelson delivered another dramatic finish in a major on Monday, flopping a chip out of deep rough to 2 feet for a birdie on the final hole and a one-shot victory in the PGA Championship.
The putt wasn't nearly as long as his 18-footer to win the Masters last year, and there was no need to jump for joy this time.
Still, it was a sweet conclusion to a major championship season that had gone sour until he put together his best golf of the summer stretched over five days at Baltusrol by a storm-delayed final round.
It was the first Monday finish at the PGA Championship in 19 years. And not since 1986 at Inverness had a player from the last group won with a birdie on the 72nd hole at the final major.

I'm pretty sure anyone (except amateurs) who makes the cut gets a check, though the amounts gradually decrease as you get down the leaderboard. The real money comes from endorsements and appearance fees, though.
Same here, I am also glad he is a staunch conservative.
Woohoo for Phil!
Did you know he's actually right-handed, but his dad taught him how to golf; his father is/was right-handed, and tried to teach him standing side-by-side, but Phil said it was easier to learn if he swung facing from his father, in mirror image, so he learned to golf left-handed. I like that.
I despise his attitude. When things aren't going his way he curses like nobody's business (in front of many younger adoring fans) and slams his clubs into the ground. A couple months ago after a particularly poor effort at a putt he dragged his putter along the green, scuffing it up badly. He's out of control, and very immature.
Well, for the next major they'll lengthen Augusta again and give Tiger some easier landing zones at the 310 mark to ensure the best player in the world has an even better chance of winning.
He's money bags and the PGA is cashing in when he's in the winners circle.
It brings in the fence sitting golf fans, but the purists are sick of it.
Cash is paid out down to the very end for those who make the cut (I think), although there is a major dropoff. As the winner, Phil gets almost $1.2 million. Elkington and Bjorn (tied for 2nd ) get over a half-million apiece. Tiger and Davis Love will get just under $300K apiece. Hal Sutton (finished last in 79th place) will get a check for $11,600.
You'll notice that on a multiple tie in any position, the dollar amount is the same - I'm assuming that particular portion gets split among them; so in theory the guy who finished one shot worse could make significantly more money.
Woody...I've heard otherwise about Phil's politics(midroad)....don't know for sure. Most golfers would be Freepers if they had the time. Only real Dem out there is Scott Simpson...the scumbag.
CBS does golf better than the other two networks combined. Their on-course commentary from David Feherty and Gary McCord makes the coverage for me. I don't have much use for ABC's coverage as a rule - dry, dry, dry.
That said, I think I heard Lanny Wadkins say "it'll be interesting to see how he does" about 30 times yesterday. Of course it's interesting, Lanny - that's why you're on site.
Everyone who makes the cut earns a paycheck. If you miss the cut, you don't get paid. Unlike any other sport, PGA Tour golf is complete meritocracy, because if you don't make the cut, you don't get paid; period. There are no bonuses, no appearance fees, no nothing: indeed, every player, even Tiger Woods, has to pay an entry fee to play in each and every PGA tournament.
For instance, here is a purse for a typical tournament (I chose the Quad Cities). http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/r030/results
Not really... take, for example, today's finish -- Elkington and Bjorn tie for 2nd, so they split 2nd + 3rd place money. Woods and Love would split 4th + 5th place money. There's no way someone lower on the leaderboard can make more than someone higher.
I do like the look of utter disgust on his face, though, when the guy suggests "throwing money" at a problem.
Are these the ones you refer to?
Not available about PGA or USGA events. There IS a lot of money available in appearance fees, but those are only at those fake tournaments like the Skins Game and those stupid Monday night golf things on ABC. Only available, of course, to the top players--for obvious reasons.

Don't forget the "off-season" events that aren't part of the official PGA schedule. Plus, guys at the top of the world rankings (Woods, Els, Singh, etc.) can go play internationally for a big appearance fee.
Excellent. Now he has two majors under his belt which should help his confidence.
