You'll notice that on a multiple tie in any position, the dollar amount is the same - I'm assuming that particular portion gets split among them; so in theory the guy who finished one shot worse could make significantly more money.

Not really... take, for example, today's finish -- Elkington and Bjorn tie for 2nd, so they split 2nd + 3rd place money. Woods and Love would split 4th + 5th place money. There's no way someone lower on the leaderboard can make more than someone higher.
