"The problem with squandering your credibility is that nobody ever listens to you anymore."

You've hit a homer with that thought. I don't even care what the NYT prints tomorrow because we know its all BS.

This must reeeaallllly be frustrating for them....5 plus years and they haven't pinned ANYTHING on W, not to mention his admininstration.

Given that they already know that Rove's apparent innocent comment is in no way illegal, their frustration builds. Doubly bad because the investigation THEY demanded put their own reporter in jail.

W learned while in his dad's WH that the media is out to hang ANY republican for the slightest mistep and demanded none from his staff, which has kept things clean.

Karl certainly knew this just as much as W. He's an honorable man and would not intentionally out a CIA undercover agent. Karl's clean. I can't wait for the end of this story. Libs foiled again!

Because Wilson's wife was in charge of getting someone to go to Niger as part of her job at CIA -- she no longer was in covert operations -- in fact she hadn't been that for a long time. It is not illegal to say someone work's at CIA, it is illegal to reveal a covert operations person out in the field.

Per the NYT’s Kristof, the CIA brought Plame and others back to Washington for safety reasons out of concern that Aldrich Aimes had disclosed their identities to the Russian’s before his arrest in 1994.

How could Rove know Wilson's wife essentially authorized her hubbies trip without Rove knowing her position in the CIA?

I have yet to hear that the posistion that she had that gave her the clout to appoint her hubby was one that was covert. I assume one that works for the CIA can have both public and secret jobs. For example, a man may be a Navy Seal and everyone may know that fact but some of his assignments may remain secret. She must have had a posistion that she was able to use to list on her mortgage company application, credit union bank account, and the form 1040.

Just remember, Cooper never published his story.

Cooper published. Miller didn't. And subsequent events proved Wilson was a liar in that story to Cooper.

And some government officials have noted to TIME in interviews, (as well as to syndicated columnist Robert Novak) that Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, is a CIA official who monitors the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. These officials have suggested that she was involved in her husband's being dispatched Niger to investigate reports that Saddam Hussein's government had sought to purchase large quantities of uranium ore, sometimes referred to as yellow cake, which is used to build nuclear devices.

In an interview with TIME, Wilson, who served as an ambassador to Gabon and as a senior American diplomat in Baghdad under the current president's father, angrily said that his wife had nothing to do with his trip to Africa. "That is bulls__t. That is absolutely not the case," Wilson told TIME. "I met with between six and eight analysts and operators from CIA and elsewhere [before the Feb 2002 trip]. None of the people in that meeting did I know, and they took the decision to send me. This is a smear job."

Here is the relevant portion of the Senate Intelligence Committee Report on the U.S. Intelligence Community's Prewar Intelligence Assessments on Iraq (specifically on page 39):
"Interviews and documents provided to the committee indicate tht his wife, a CPD employee, suggested his name for the trip [in a memo to a deputy chief in the CIA's Directorate of Operations dated February 12, 2002]. The CPD reports officer told committee staff that the former ambassador's wife says, "my husband has good relations with both the PM [prime minister] and the former Minister of Mines (not to mention lots of French contacts), both of whom could possibly shed light on this sort of activity."

Drudge is clueless ... he keeps throwing crap at the barn door hoping something will stick. Late last week (Friday) he had headlines telling us SCJ Rehnquist had submitted his resignation ... didn't happen. He got lucky once when the liberal media (Newsweek) leaked a story on Lewinsky ... ever since he's been sucking hind tit.

MICHAEL ISIKOFF, REPORTER, NEWSWEEK: I should say, we did more than quote attorneys. What we did is we obtained an internal TIME magazine e-mail that Matt Cooper wrote to his bureau chief, Michael Duffy, immediately after talking to Karl Rove on July 11th, that's before the Novak column, in which he says: "Double super-secret background, not to be attributed to the White House or Rove, but Rove gave me a big warning about some of what Joe Wilson has been saying. He wasn't sent to Niger by George Tenet or Vice President Cheney, it was Wilson's wife who apparently works at the agency on WMD issues who authorized the trip." That's the quote from Matt Cooper to his editor right after talking to Karl Rove.

It doesn't answer underlying questions here. For one thing, as many people have pointed out, and we pointed out, Karl Rove doesn't identify Valerie Plame by name,
so that's an important distinction.

Why don't you just go back to the DU and whine about this. I don't care if Karl Rove stood out on the White House lawn and held a press conference announcing that Valerie Plame recommended her husband! THERE WAS NO LAW BROKEN BECAUSE SHE WAS NOT A COVERT AGENT AND THERE WAS NO INTENT TO DO HARM. There, got it????

Miller is a partisan Democrat and would not cover for Karl Rove. Miller was already in trouble for refusing to reveal a source within the CIA who was involved in a security leak. It may be the same source. It may be Valerie Plame, herself. It may be Joe Wilson, via Valerie Plame. This may be the only crime associated with Valerie Plame and Miller is protecting someone who could get in big trouble if she talked.

I thought it was during Clinton that happened. She hasn't been in covert operations for over ten years and the media is certifiable for pushing her outing. I am beginning to think she may be one of the leakers at the CIA that undermined Tenent and Pres Bush.

A better idea would be for the management of the NYT to resign or be fired.

I would tend to agree with you.

In addition, everyone in the press has conveniently forgotten about Plame's boss, who resigned shortly after all of this bubbled up to the surface.

Was this story put forward by the same folks that brought us the GW Air National Guard stuff? or one of those other stories that don't seem to float.Question is, how long can the old Gray Lady float with such biased dribble?
