There has been an explosion at Aldgate East underground station in London, causing the closure of the entire Tube network.
There are also reports that a second incident took place at Edgware Road station in north west London.
The Aldgate East blast was caused by "some kind of power surge", according to Tube infrastructure company Metronet, which is responsible for maintaining the Metropolitan line.
A spokesman said: "We don't know the extent of the problem yet."
A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We have just sent some resources out to the scene."
British Transport Police confirmed that there are "walking wounded" and said paramedics have responded to one report of a person classed as "life at risk".
"It's chaos, with people trying to work out what has happened," said a spokesman.
"All we know at the moment is that staff reported a loud bang at 8.49am. No one is sure what caused an explosion, but it is thought it could have been a collision, a power cut, or a power cable problem."
One witness said the packed underground train he was on was 200 metres from Kings Cross when there was a huge flash.
The train stopped and people were using umberellas to smash windows of the trains. Passengers were led out of the train by underground staff.
He added people were milling around Kings Cross covered in soot.
A COOL, CALM LONDONER E-MAILS: [K. J. Lopez]
I'm writing this sitting in my office in London working as normal.
As I look out the window I see no buses, very few cars but lots of people walking on the streets; however, these are not the images of Sept 11 - people walking in one direction out of the city. These are Londoners walking left, right, up the street, down the street, going about their normal lunchtime business.
We have faced terror before - Nazi terror, Irish Republican terror - and have not been beaten. This will not beat us either.
The overwhelming feeling round our office is "Is this best they can do?" - it looks and sounds much worse on 24hr news channels than in person.

Time to deport all Muslums!
Yeah, after coddling the terrorists in their midst, that should really comfort the killed and injured. He is trying to wash that blood from his hands this morning.
She'll be posting the "dose" later!
This is amazing. Yesterday or the day before, I talked about a dozen bombers hitting a dozen malls or a dozen airline terminals simultaneously.
"Jihad is WWIII". Say it loud. Say it long. We said it here on 9.11. When will the world wake up?
The G8 is happening way up in a remote place in Scotland, not in London. What may have happened is that the G8 acted as a distraction for the security people.
I doubt it made any real difference though, this sort of attack is almost impossible to halt directly. Past experience with the IRA suggests that you need to get the cells before they're active, not after they've gone active.
Just another reason why newspaper readership is down. One would think that a news organization would have someone watching the wires 24/7.
I felt it was due...
Some guy just called Curtis and Kuby and said all Muslims are peaceful and the Koran has only love for Christians and Jews. He said, "don't start condemning Muslims". I feel like exploding. Kuby of course is saying, "it is one person that did this and not terror related". I hate these liberals.
Let us all fervently pray the Brits show the resolve of the Falklands era and of WW2.
The Islamic terrorists must think that the Spanish reaction to the Madrid bombing is something repeatable.
Not only that, but terrorist groups seem to like to take credit for what they did. Better to downplay it as something else and make the terrorist claim the act, rather than say we think it is terrorism and have the guilty terrorists claim that they are innocent and that we (the world) are just blaming it on them. jmo
I'm having less problem with this concept with each passing day.
Oh my GOD! I just heard the news...terrible!
It was also "the day after the G8".
It was also "3 days after the Fourth of July".
Pretty meaningless.
Far more likely that it had some fool anniversary of some 7/7 historical event - but who cares. On that basis, every day is the anniversary of something.
If they had hit London some days BEFORE the Olympic committee announcement, as did the Madrid bombings, I would agree it had some correlation. It is more likely they erroneously thought that the announcement was supposed to be made on 7/8 than that they decided to hit the Olympic site the day after the announcement.
It was smart to send the Americans of Japanese descent to fight in Europe. They kicked the hell out of the Germans.
FNC: People still trapped in the subway. No word on numbers (a large number of people ride the trains in the morning).
What an idiot. She kept asking him why we were attacked on 9/11 and he couldn't tell her.
