There has been an explosion at Aldgate East underground station in London, causing the closure of the entire Tube network.
There are also reports that a second incident took place at Edgware Road station in north west London.
The Aldgate East blast was caused by "some kind of power surge", according to Tube infrastructure company Metronet, which is responsible for maintaining the Metropolitan line.
A spokesman said: "We don't know the extent of the problem yet."
A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We have just sent some resources out to the scene."
British Transport Police confirmed that there are "walking wounded" and said paramedics have responded to one report of a person classed as "life at risk".
"It's chaos, with people trying to work out what has happened," said a spokesman.
"All we know at the moment is that staff reported a loud bang at 8.49am. No one is sure what caused an explosion, but it is thought it could have been a collision, a power cut, or a power cable problem."
One witness said the packed underground train he was on was 200 metres from Kings Cross when there was a huge flash.
The train stopped and people were using umberellas to smash windows of the trains. Passengers were led out of the train by underground staff.
He added people were milling around Kings Cross covered in soot.
You're not winning any friends here today.
WTH does THAT mean?!
It's nobody's fault but the islamofascists. They are the ones who have a stated goal to rule the world. Everything else is just our response.
Russia needs to eliminate Chechnya and the UK/US needs to terminate Syria and Iran.
One recommendation to the protestors at G8. Keep your bloody mouths shut. NO one is in the mood for your tripe.

Tactically, this is a brilliantly conceived operation...a few suicide bombers..scattered small explosions, on the transportation system, and the entire metro area, if not the whole country ..is paralyzed..and will be so for a few days at least...To plan this takes people who have lived in the area a long time..who understand how the city works..these will turn out, IMHO to have been longtime residents
Blair is leaving for London now.
Let us not forget that FReeper Barbara K. Olsen died on Sept 11 2001. Some of us are on the frontlines in this odd war. Prayers and solidarity for all concerned.

How come Clarke didn't warn us about the 1993 Tower bombing, the OKC bombing, the Embassies, the Cole?? Where was Clarke then??
Report: Islamic Group Makes Claim of Responsibility for London Blasts
The Associated Press
Published: Jul 7, 2005
CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - A group calling itself "The Secret Organization of al-Qaida in Europe" has posted a claim of responsibility for the series of blasts in London, saying they were in retaliation for Britain's involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The statement, which also threatened attacks in Italy and Denmark, was published on a Web site popular with Islamic militants, according to Elaph, a secular Arabic-language news Web site, and Der Spiegel magazine in Berlin, which both published the text on their Web sites.
"Rejoice, Islamic nation. Rejoice, Arab world. The time has come for vengeance against the Zionist crusader government of Britain in response to the massacres Britain committed in Iraq and Afghanistan," said the statement, which was translated by The Associated Press in Cairo.
The authenticity of the message could not be immediately confirmed. The Associated Press was unable to access the Web site where it was posted, which was closed quickly after the reports.
"The heroic mujahedeen carried out a blessed attack in London, and now Britain is burning with fear and terror, from north to south, east to west," the statement said.
"We warned the British government repeated. We have carried out our promise and carried out a military attack in Britain after great efforts by the heroic mujahedeen over a long period to ensure its success."
"We continue to warn the governments of Denmark and Italy and all crusader governments that they will receive the same punishment if they do not withdraw their troops from Iraq and Afghanistan," the statement went on.
It was signed: "The Secret Organization of al-Qaida in Europe."
The last major attack in Europe claimed by al-Qaida was a string of bombs that hit commuter trains in Madrid in March 2004, killing 191 people.
There is no lost love in my heart for France's politicians...yet I believe that we Freepers will still show our metal in support of any country torn by these sick bastar_s.
I will not rest until every terrorist on earth and in the universe is exterminated.
Yes, I watched him twice and then again with the G-8 crowd. I have such a great respect for PM Blair. He's been our staunchest ally and now it's our turn to be his, because it's a certainty that he will get blamed to some degree or criticsized by his detractors and the terrorist supporters.
Chingford is well away from central London where the bombs have gone off. It is east of London but not at all close to Aldgate. Chingford itself has a railway terminal but where Aldgate and Liverpool street are in zone 1 of the tube system Chingford and Epping are in zones 5 and 6 respectively. Sorry i can't post you a map but I hope this helps put your mind at rest. There will be a helpline set up some time today, if I find out details i will post and pin you.
They should just turn the London mosques into terrorist camps. Seal them up during their services this weekend.
On September 11th, 2001 England and The United States weren't in Iraq or Afghanistan. Shut Up.
I thought of you first thing this morning. Our prayers are with you and your country, glad you are OK.
DU is crap, but we already know that. Are you posting their drivel to "expose" them or to give them exposure?
That's the objective, terrorize people. The reality is that your chances of being the victim of a terrorist attack are probably on the same level as being struck by lightning. Probably less. People need to be alert, but they also should carry on with their normal routine.
