Justice O'Connor is retiring. Speculation on her replacement began long ago.
It is too bad that he cannot expend his political capital to right the wrong done to Robert Bork. It would make a good starting point to bring justice back to the US Constitution.
Odd as it sounds, one need not be a lawyer to be a SCOTUS justice.

I suppose J.R. Brown needs to stay put for the same reason C. Thomas needs to stay where he is and not go for CJ. Already been throught the fight for that one, don't need extra battles. I think she'd be great though. Estrada or Pickering would be fine, after what they've been through already. Pickering is retirement age (they filibustered him until he was old) so I'd be in favor of Estrada.

But does one have to serve for a time on the court of appeals before going to the supreme court? you have other judges that are currently on the district court of appeals. Wouldn't they have the inside tract for a nomination?

It's interesting that you say that, because I had the same queasy reaction to your suggestion about engineers. I'm not one myself, but I envision an engineer as someone who sees problems and wants to design elaborate if clever solutions to them. Good idea when you're building a dam, but not when you're making laws.
An entrepreneur, OTOH, knows the costs of grand government plans built on the "evolving needs of society" and all that nonsense, and views them therefore with the skepticism they deserve.
I grant that Bill Gates, who has long since gone native, would be a poor choice.
