Justice O'Connor is retiring. Speculation on her replacement began long ago.

It is too bad that he cannot expend his political capital to right the wrong done to Robert Bork. It would make a good starting point to bring justice back to the US Constitution.

If it's got to be a lawyer I'd like it to be Mark Levin. That would make Nancy Pelosi grind her teeth to dust. Do you think she would still be saying that the SCrOTUS is "Almost like God has spoken" if we manage to swing the 5-4 the other way?

Condi's not a lawyer, right?

Odd as it sounds, one need not be a lawyer to be a SCOTUS justice.

I suppose J.R. Brown needs to stay put for the same reason C. Thomas needs to stay where he is and not go for CJ. Already been throught the fight for that one, don't need extra battles. I think she'd be great though. Estrada or Pickering would be fine, after what they've been through already. Pickering is retirement age (they filibustered him until he was old) so I'd be in favor of Estrada.

As long as it's not La Raza Gonzales. Maybe we're cool on him since he is sitting AG.

I'm not so sure about that. One characteristic of many successful entrepreneurs is that they are willing to bend the rules occasionally in order to be successful. I want someone who knows the rules and insists on abiding by them.

Bill Gates, for example, would make a terrible Supreme Court justice.

Is Viet Dinh that conserative professor from Georgetown? I'd like to see someone from outside the beltway who went to an ordinary state college.

I once had a lawyer swear to me that he'd never let an engineer or accountant serve on his juries if he could remove them through the pre-emptory challenge process.

That was enough to convince me that engineers and accountants are exactly what we need in courtrooms.

Hillary. Get her the hell out of the way and then have the other three who are on their way out retire. Replace them with the most conservative folks you can find.

My choice is JANICE ROGERS BROWN.

But does one have to serve for a time on the court of appeals before going to the supreme court? you have other judges that are currently on the district court of appeals. Wouldn't they have the inside tract for a nomination?

Janice Rogers Brown. Black, female and conservative. I would love to see the Dems filibuster her and then go back to their constituents and tell them how theya re looking out for them.

A consevative, black female, Patsy Ireland, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Kim Tandy's worst nightmare.

Yup. Former Asst. U.S. Atty General. Architect of the USA PATRIOT Act. Law clerk to O'Connor. Special Counsel to the U.S. Senate Whitewater Committee, etc, etc

It's interesting that you say that, because I had the same queasy reaction to your suggestion about engineers. I'm not one myself, but I envision an engineer as someone who sees problems and wants to design elaborate if clever solutions to them. Good idea when you're building a dam, but not when you're making laws.

An entrepreneur, OTOH, knows the costs of grand government plans built on the "evolving needs of society" and all that nonsense, and views them therefore with the skepticism they deserve.

I grant that Bill Gates, who has long since gone native, would be a poor choice.
