Saw War of the Worlds last night. Did anybody else notice the cool cameo appearance, right at the end, by...Gene Barry? He played Dr. Clayton Forrester, the hero of George Pal's version of the story. He was part of the group standing on the steps in the house in Boston--the white-haired guy on the left. He must be 80-something, but he looked pretty good.
Gene Barry searched every church for the heroine. Why? Because he knew that the heroine would seek sanctuary in a church for protection from those evil aliens!
Dingle's brother.
TV back then was a 1000% better. We didn't appreciate it then and took it for granted.
I get a kick out of it, when they do things like this in the movie remakes...there was also something like this when they remade the 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'....the hero doctor in that movie was an actor by the name of Kevin McCarthy....when they remade that movie many years later, with Donald Sutherland and Leonard Nimoy, there was a scene on the street...the scene is from inside of a car, and as the crowds are passing in front of the windshield of the car, a pedestrian throws himself across and windshield, and hollers something like "Run, they are coming", or words to that effect....that pedestrian was none other than Kevin McCarthy...and he is hollering the words similar to what he told his rescuers at the end of the original movie he made...
Remember that show the "Name of the Game"? Barry was in a neat episode about the future when everybody lived underground due to the air pollution. Then he woke up and it was a dream or something. Maybe it was a car wreck and he came to after being knocked out. Not sure.
War of The Remakes. Hollywood. To Hell with it.
OK, OK, this thread makes me more interested in going to see the movie. ;)
It was a great movie dispite what some critics said about it . The original was one of my all time favorite movies too. My take is the currrent version is taking the perspective of one of the people who were running away in the original version.
I agree. Hollywood seems to be incapable of making a movie today unless it is a remake of some old TV show or movie.
I am betting this will come to the big screen next.
That is just way cool!
:-)
The scene with the train was really creepy. This movie was typical Speilberg; when it was good it was really good, when it was sappy, it was syrupy .... but not too much.
Would that be of AlGore's "What about Norwood-Dingle?" fame?
TV's Bat Masterson. With the walking stick and bowler hat. In the sixties. In Black and White.
I just discovered something cool; Tom Cruise was born on MY 9th birthday!
That was just awesome!! What was interesting was watching the faces of the crowd as it barrelled past!
His derringer was in his belt buckle.
I had a toy one, belt buckle derringer, like it when I was a kid. I had a huge selection of TV cowboy show guns. Damn I wish I still had all that stuff, it'd be worth a fortune in memories and $$$.
Push the button, Frank.
