Blair's son to work for US Republican
smh ^ | June 26, 2005

Euan Blair, the British Prime Minister's eldest son, is to take up an internship working on Capitol Hill in Washington for a leading Republican in the House of Representatives.

The 21-year-old, who is about to graduate from Bristol University with a degree in ancient history, will spend three months as an unpaid intern with the Republican majority staff on the powerful Rules Committee.

Euan Blair's internship follows Prime Minister John Howard's son Richard's 2004 spell working for President George Bush's re-election campaign.

The UK Sunday Telegraph reported that Blair will be mentored by the chairman of the committee, David Dreier, a Californian representative who is a close ally of the governing party's leadership in the House.

Despite his father's close relationship with President Bush, news that Euan is to work for the Republican-led committee prompted surprise in Democrat circles.

Eric Burns, an aide to Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, the leading Democrat on the committee, said: "Working on the Rules Committee will be quite a learning process as it has always been one of the most partisan in the House".It is extremely surprising that the son of a Labour Prime Minister would intern with the Republican majority staff on the committee."

British diplomats played a role in the process.

Tonight, a Government spokesman confirmed: "Euan Blair has been given the opportunity to take up a short unpaid internship with the Rules Committee of the House of Representatives.

"He also hopes for a short unpaid internship with a Democrat member of Congress.

"Given the obvious sensitivities the Prime Minister asked the British Embassy to be involved."

Neat!

I guess the liberals in the UK will become more conservative, while the Dems in the US are shifting more and more to the left.

Maybe Blair figured out that our Dems are not social liberals, but terrorist cuddling anti-innocent people bunch, and he wants no part of them.

Or he might have developed a different political philosophy than his parents.

"Blair is VERY LIBERAL."

Maybe he is liberal socially, but when the chips were down, he stood by President Bush in the War on Terror.

The Labor Party already had that fight, with the moderates beating the nutso leftists like Foote and Scargill that regularly got their donkeys kicked by Thatcher.

"Euan" must be a form of "John", as is Ioan (Welsh) and Ian.

Great, perhaps someday he can lead the Tories (provided he inherited the same testosterone as his dad).

He certainly did, and did so with little (if anything) to gain and everything to lose, politically. We should never forget that.

It would seem that young Mr. Blair doesn't care to work for losers like the demonRATs in Congress.

My bet is the only RAT with an open intern slot was some nutjob like Maxine Waters or Cynthia McKinney.

I see very little difference between the Democrats and the British Labour Party. Where there are differences the Labour Party are further left (and that's at leadership level, the Party also still encompasses many who are well to the left of that).

I agree...when the chips were down, he did the right thing. Prime Minister Blair knew his country was next on the list, and he fully understood what 9/11 was all about in America. He was one of the first to join President Bush after this horrific attack. Here Here for his son. It is a fine way to learn DEMOCRACY in action.
