May 23 issue - Did a report in NEWSWEEK set off a wave of deadly anti-American riots in Afghanistan? That's what numerous news accounts suggested last week as angry Afghans took to the streets to protest reports, linked to us, that U.S. interrogators had desecrated the Qur'an while interrogating Muslim terror suspects. We were as alarmed as anyone to hear of the violence, which left at least 15 Afghans dead and scores injured. But I think it's important for the public to know exactly what we reported, why, and how subsequent events unfolded.

Read this snip from the U.S. Constitution:
"Treason again the United States shall consist of......giving them AID and COMFORT.
"No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act....."
I read the article on the web, so I'm qualified. I volunteer to be a witness. Is there another stout-hearted freeper to join me? Must be able to pack on a moment's notice, LOL.
IsaKOFI and his editors should have to spend about twenty hard years making little rocks out of big rocks.

What would The Left expect as 'punishment'?
Would a whitewash apology (like Newsweek offered) be acceptable to them?
We all know the answers to these rhetorical questions. So, what are we going to do about this? What should we do?
But the incident wasn't true. Every thing else is just semantics.
well stated.
Hogwash. This "apology" is nothing more than the latest step in a carefully choreographed dance that was intended from the start to serve as the Abu Ghraib sequel. This is about as sincere as Dingy Harry Reid's "apology" to Karl Rove immediately after he called President Bush a "loser", and was offered for the very same reason - get the charge out there and then "apologize" so you can evade taking any responsibility for your statements, and characterize any outrage expressed by the people you just smeared as partisan piling on.
just reinforces my policy of shunning shoddy journalists and those outlets that publish them. this story reminds me of the tragedy of that poor British security guy the BBC smeared over supposedly "sexing" up the WMD evidence. remember? it turned out their reporter "sexed" up the story but in the meantime the guy committed suicide over being dragged through the mud altho' he turned out to be innocent. these people want protection from having to disclose their sources as if they were a special class of citizen, and yet have no shame for the repercussions their sloppy, biased writing cause. revulsion and outrage are what i feel when their missteps cause the taking of human life or reputation.
Remember Newsweek is the bunch that would NOT run the Lewinski story. A story of US troops desecrating the Koran? Well, stop the presses for that one.
Logic. Why do you think it would be different?
People were killed because of the story, not because of what actually happened. If the story were true or false, it would make no difference.
When are the Lefties going to learn? It's not your daddy's "media" anymore. We have the internet and talk radio. The "media" won't be able to get away with their lies. WE, THE PEOPLE are now the "watchdog." Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. The Liberal "media" is trying to create "another Vietnam" and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Ain't gonna happen this time.
My letter to "Newsweak"
Dear Sir:
You certainly failed to meet some sort of journalistic standards with your bloody false report about desecration of a Koran. This is an example of why I don't read your magazine, even when I am on a plane and the alternative is reading the plane's safety warnings. I hope you and the responsible parties go to your graves thinking of the lives lost in the riots that resulted from your lies and very likely additional western lives yet to be sacrificed in a conflict you helped inflame.
George Murphy
I apologize to Newsweak for saying they're nothing more than fishwrap.
(And my apology means about as much as theirs does.)
Yep. Kick them out of a moving taxi in downtown Kabul and let 'em stand on their First Amendment rights. Newsweek is little more than an A.N.S.W.E.R. promo flyer on coated paper, and everyone there from Isikoff on up are complicit in an ugly and deliberate attempt to F things up for GWB regardless of how many Americans have to pay the price.
Hopefully my prior comment was not construed to be a defence of them. I haven't bought an issue since Milton Friedman stopped writing in "My Turn" every other week.
Now that I agree with, and if there is no law covering this there should be one.
Are there any other articles about Newsweak's F-up beside this one?
Just the like the old LBJ story, "I don't care if he did it, I just want then to deny it."
Not the issue.
AppyPappy's statement was, "Their shoddy ass journalism got people killed".
My response was that a stellar journalistic investigation of a true incident would have killed just as many. The point being: Would AppyPappy then laud such reporting?
