Newsweek apologizes for getting Koran-Guantanamo Bay story wrong. (The Editor's Desk)

May 23 issue - Did a report in NEWSWEEK set off a wave of deadly anti-American riots in Afghanistan? That's what numerous news accounts suggested last week as angry Afghans took to the streets to protest reports, linked to us, that U.S. interrogators had desecrated the Qur'an while interrogating Muslim terror suspects. We were as alarmed as anyone to hear of the violence, which left at least 15 Afghans dead and scores injured. But I think it's important for the public to know exactly what we reported, why, and how subsequent events unfolded.

"if anyone was offended."

I'm sure no one was offended...... because... how can you be offended when you are dead?

Our original source later said he couldn't be certain about reading of the alleged Qur'an incident in the report we cited, and said it might have been in other investigative documents or drafts

This passes for NEWS? at Newsweak? Splains a lot.

Let's face it, as long as there's Republicans in charge the MSM media will work overtime to damage the U.S. all they can.

This much is obvious by their coverage(lack of honest coverage) on Bolton, and the DUmmies unprecedented use of filibusters.

Totally dishonest Coverage.

Correct. And this weak apology doesn't bring back the dead, does it?

The liberal media is just as big of a threat to the United States as Al-queda.

Our original source later said he couldn't be certain about reading of the alleged Qur'an incident in the report we cited, and said it might have been in other investigative documents or drafts.

Maybe it came from a certain Kinko's fax machine in a certain Texas city that faxed decades-old documents to one Dan Rather.

===

Newsweek to you who got killed because of our story: Sorry, but hey, that's business -- we stand by our source (just like Dan Rather is still standing by his source).

"I wonder if Dollar Rent a Car, Sprint, Hyundai, Exxon/Mobil, Franklin Templeton Investments, or any other sponsors of the above report know what they're supporting? I'd act quickly to protect the brand."

Mudville Gazette has great coverage on this story, here:

Seriously, I wonder how big an influence such anti-America news must have had in inspiring the nutcases behind 9-11.

News sources must be sued by terror victims to the fullest degree, if their reportings are inaccurate, IMHO.

Unfortunately no amount of apologizing or corrections will have any effect in Islamic countries. It's now an accepted fact there that we desecrated the Koran and any retractions will be explained away by the radicals as attempts by our govt to silence our media. The damage is done, and it's permanent.

When "news" reporters begin releasing names of people who lie to them, they sill start to regain credibility.
