May 23 issue - Did a report in NEWSWEEK set off a wave of deadly anti-American riots in Afghanistan? That's what numerous news accounts suggested last week as angry Afghans took to the streets to protest reports, linked to us, that U.S. interrogators had desecrated the Qur'an while interrogating Muslim terror suspects. We were as alarmed as anyone to hear of the violence, which left at least 15 Afghans dead and scores injured. But I think it's important for the public to know exactly what we reported, why, and how subsequent events unfolded.

The logical question must be asked: How many editions of the Koran would go down a toilet without clogging?
The concept is preposterous on its face.

'..the press consistently..publishes incorrect information...to damage Republicans....'
To damage Republicans, and specifically, Pres Bush. What have we come to, when our own media seems willing to harm our country and our soldiers simply to justify their own political positions??
And, when Christian missionaries and nuns and priest were killed or tortured, can anyone remember masses of Christians throughout the world rioting or intentionally killing innocent people?
To: Carry_Okie
You have to realize, few Muslims have actually seen a toilet.

I hate to be a stick in the mud (okay, I'm lying... no I don't), but where is the good ol' conservative attitude of making rioters responsible for the riot and murderers responsible for the murder?
It's still the same principle, isn't it? How is saying Newsweek is responsible for the deaths any different from saying that video games incite violence?
To: Alouette
Worth Repeating:
Newsweek Lied, People Died.
Of course, we should also include:
CNN Lied (about Hussein's torturing), (more) People died
NY Times Lied (about Stalin's death camps), (more) People died
...
I think we can continue this list for all the MSM FRAUDcasters.

Newsweek acting like Iago. They are complicit.

... they [Newsweek] are now responsible for more deaths than occurred at Gitmo and Abu Ghraib combined.Very worth repeating.

There is no question that a vast majority of readers of this blog feel the American daily press is anti military in general and I agree with that assessment. What can be done to change the over liberal press corps to present a more unbiased viewpoint instead of always rushing to assume the worst of a situation instead of waiting to find out how a story plays out before publishing it??

Islamists are not going to believe this retraction/apology. The horse is out of the barn.
The islamists could care less whether it actually happened or not. I'm sure they are extremely grateful to newsweak for handing them some much-needed ammo to stir up the hatred of their brain-dead mooslimb bretheren at our expense.
Everyone even remotely involved in this at newsweak should be fired immediately.

Certainly the Islamists killing people bear primary responsibility, but I don't think that Newsweek can be absolved from blame - they knew what printing this would do, and *at best* didn't care if their claims were true or not.

Everyone, everywhere who would like to favor a Free Press ought to be horrified by these
NEWSWEEK MURDERS.
I have definitely had it with these FRAUDcasters. With "Freedom of" comes "Responsibility for...". That is what I was taught, it is what I demand from my children, and it is implicit in the Constitution.
It is time to demand more than a simple apology from these FRAUDcasters.
Newsweek Lied. People Died.

If the little b*st*rds at Newsweak were really sorry they would liquidate their assets to pay the families of the innocents killed in the riots caused by their blatant abuse of the 1st Amendment. They would never again publish the rag that disgraces newsstands today.
Their reportage of an unconfirmed allegation has caused the deaths of nearly a dozen and a half people. There is grounds for criminal manslaughter charges here. If you yell 'fire' in a crowded theater when there is no fire, you are responsible for the resulting injury/death. Well, they yelled fire. They called the tune, the piper must now be paid.
