Senator Lautenberg (Rat-NJ) speaking on FoxNews now. Isn't he near death? And since when did he become an expert on homeland security?

WHITE HOUSE & CAPITAL ARE EVACUATING - FIGHTER JETS OVERHEAD.....(Fox News)Workers cleared to return to offices after evacuation scare in D.C.
Capitol, White House evacuated after scare
Date published: 5/11/2005
WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. Capitol and White House were evacuated Wednesday after a small plane entered restricted airspace over the capital. Within minutes people were allowed back into the buildings.
Several other government buildings, including the Treasury Department and the U.S. Supreme Court order people to safer locations.
A small plane breached the security zone over Washington, several law enforcement officials said, prompting alerts across the city.
The plane was approached by a fighter aircraft and veered away.

CNN: Plane is now being escorted. Plane is heading north. Cesna prop plane. Helicopter in route to assist in getting plane to land (helicopter travels slower, so is more maneuverable than F-16s).
Plane radio may have malfunctioned.

Im sorry, but I think this was an over-reaction. A small cessna is no more of a threat than a U-Haul. Where it is a greater threat (NBC attack), evacuating buildings and running around outside is pointless, and perhaps a more dangerous place to be.

"I don't think F-16s fly much under 150 knots even with the flaps out."
I don't know if it was an F-16, but I had a jet almost stalled right over my house a day or two after 9-11; it was monitoring a small plane. It was nose up and you could hear the whooshing and popping of the jet engine, like it was under stress. I don't think it was even going 100 miles an hour. But what do I know . . .

CNN: Capitol Hill police preventing people from returning to the Capitol building for about fifteen minutes or so. Good time to move RAT Senators' offices into broom closets! ;-)

Wonder how much that little "mistake" cost us? Maybe a huge fine would be in order. Heh... We've been musing that keeping anyone in the capitol ~from~ working saves money.
Scares like this are not a waste of money at all, IMHO. You can't ever simulate this kind of test. Everyone from the receptionist on the PA system in the buildings to the F-16 pilots learned and benefited from this practice.
