Most of Mrs. Bush's humor at the correspondents' dinner was just right: Edgy but not over the edge. But I think the stripper and horse jokes were totally beneath her.
Just put it to the other-shoe test: If it were Teresa Heinz Kerry standing up on the dais telling the same jokes, the conservative commentariat would be buzzing for the rest of the year about what a tasteless skank she is.

I'm with you--I winced at the horse joke. The stripper one did not bother me. But to think of the POTUS doing that to a horse...nope, not gonna fly.

Well, maybe Robert Redford would like to direct a sequel. ;)

Yep, lose count after awhile. Mostly I steer clear of the "nit-picking" threads. But you were getting picked on a little too much. Don't you sometimes long for the old days when we were just a small family? Growth can be traumatic, and requires a lot of adjustments sometimes. Peace.

Relax. They do this every year.

Your rural notion vs city is spot on..
Your moral equivalence between those who might feel
Mrs Bush was pandering to the looney Hollywood left..are not necessarily those who think they are 'holier than thou' seems to me..was (in a way) a tad 'holier than thou' itself..
I don't think that there were many dairy farmers or cattle ranchers in the audience..so who was she playing for?
Obviously the Whorlywood crowd...guests that included Jane Fonda for example?
On the other hand who gives a ratz patoot either way..
By their fruits you shall know them...and regardless of what
the Bush family does or does not do in private is not all that important as long as it's legal..
What is more important is policy..foreign and domestic..
Who cares if Mrs. Bush gets a little raunchy after a couple of martoonies..or even without them..
It's really no biggie..tempest ina teapot
imo

I join you solidly in the middle. I, too, get a bit annoyed with so many on the extreme right as well as the extreme left trying to hijack the political system. My family used to call me Atilla the Hun so this move to the middle has them stunned. If it's moved me to the middle, I can only imagine the number of staunchly conservative voters our party may be losing. It's an unintended consequence and one that I hope doesn't bode ill for the Republicans in the future.
We were well on the way to being a Big Tent party and that day seems to be over.

I rate this story about as important as the American Idol Paula Abdul scandal unfloding on Drudge right now.

I don't understand the fuss either. I guess some people need excitement in their lives.

Who's uptight here, Deacon? How are your little altar boys???
You come on here claiming to be the ultimate authority on morality, and then not only revel in people calling the First Lady a "whore", "white trash" and a "tramp", you imply sinkspur is a child molester solely on the basis of his Catholicism. I'm Catholic too, like lots of others on this board - want to call all of us child molesters, or just the ones who don't think the First Lady is a "mouthy" tramp?

We're not all great-grandmas. Heh... A few of my kids' great-grandmas would have found Laura's act tame.

Evidently laughing is against some folks' principles. I wish I'd seen it. Just reading it made me crack up.

Times are changing and I just don't like to see the Republicans lose their big tent status, but there's nothing I can do about it so we'll just sit back and watch as the extremists turn off the very people who were considering a move to our party until a short while ago.

Just put it to the other-shoe test: If it were Teresa Heinz Kerry standing up on the dais telling the same jokes,That is not a fair comparison. Cosby, Leno, Letterman ... all comedians can get away with telling jokes that I cannot get away with. The same is true of politicians. Bill can tell jokes that Dubya can't and vice versa. Daddy Bush can tell jokes now that he could not tell while Bill was Pres, nor while he was Pres.
Life is not fair. That is the ultimate problem. We need the 9th District Court to pass legislation making life fair.
To: RushCrush
i totally agree with you. much ado about nothing-- the jokes, as well as the reaction to the jokes. the sky is not falling, chicken little : )

The difference is that THK is a tasteless skank and Laura is not. That's why she could pull it off.Exactly right!
To: x
Those of you who liked it are too defense to those who didn't. I was not
offended, but that is what seems to be put in the mouths of those who thought it was in poor taste
Whats the matter, we're not lock step enough now for the party?
