Most of Mrs. Bush's humor at the correspondents' dinner was just right: Edgy but not over the edge. But I think the stripper and horse jokes were totally beneath her.
Just put it to the other-shoe test: If it were Teresa Heinz Kerry standing up on the dais telling the same jokes, the conservative commentariat would be buzzing for the rest of the year about what a tasteless skank she is.

The frustrating thing is that it is apparently impossible to say I wish she hadn't said something without being accused of attacking. That's sad.

Professor, her kind of woman doesn't belong on any stage.
Of course, I shouldn't tell you this but she advocates dirty jokes.
Dirty jokes!
Strippers!
Desperate Housewives!
Farm animals!
And the worst thing
Of course, I shouldn't tell you this but-
I'll tell.
The reporter lived on my street, let me tell.
Stop! I'll tell.
She made brazen innuendoes to reporters who never had a friend
In this town till she came here.
Oh, yes, that woman made brazen innuendoes
With a gilt-edged guarantee
She had a golden glint in her eye
And a silver voice with a counterfeit ring
Just melt her down and you'll reveal
A lump of lead as cold as steel
Here, where a woman's heart should be!
They wrote all about the evening
But they wrote the most about her!
Strippers!
Desperate Housewives!
Farm animals!

LOL! You always come up with something good. I frequently agree with Michelle, but not this time.
No, if she told the jokes, by definition they're not beneath her. If she'd REFUSED to tell the jokes, that would have been a sign that they're beneath her. Jokes about strippers I expect from Democrats. Don't the Bushes know that trying to please Hollywood types isn't going to make them loved by Hollywood types?
Politicians who are notoriously straight-laced tend to act a little racy at political roasts. What's all the fuss about? A little silly ribbing among spouses?
Our President will go down in history as The Horse Masturbator, thanks to his mouthy wife.
are your words, not hers.
You're offended by Laura Bush, but you don't seem to think it's offensive to use the word "masturbation" in every post you put up.
If a joke about a city slicker mistaking a horse for a cow is dirty to you, don't you think you should remove the epithet of Ms. Malkin being a fox from your user page? I mean, SOME of us women here might take offense to that as meaning you think she is something to be hunted down and violated.
I'm not sure what it is. I've been trying to figure out what made this such a big deal. Perhaps Laura was just a pretty face for people to plaster their own vision of "perfect" on. Then she opened her mouth and showed that she is a real live person and it came as a shock.
Whatever. Tempest in a teapot I suppose.
The purpose.....of this dinner is to make fun of yourself is it not?
It's sort of like watching a Friar's Roast with the understanding that it will be a G-rated event.
Maybe he's typing with one hand?
I'm not offended by Laura. I frequently post articles that I disagree with. Like this one.
You're so right.
I too used to think that vicious ridicule and ad hominem, in the place of rational argument, were hallmarks exclusively of the rabid Left. But we find plenty of that going on here too.
"Idiot" "moron" "stupid" "holier-than-thou" "bible-thumping" "Taliban-wing" "prude" "prig" "dirty-minded" "gutter guy" (LOL, I'm not sure how to reconcile the last few) --all those terms were hurled at those of us who dared to voice criticism of the First Lady's act.
Now that Wlady Pleszczynski and Michelle Malkin, two obviously intelligent, sane, and non-fanatically Christian commentators have come out and said the same things we were saying, some of these invective-throwers are in full panic.
They never did have any good arguments, so all they could do was get nasty and personal --without any basis.
And yeah. I do feel vindicated.
"Nagging Housewives" vs. "Desperate Housewives"
I've had the feeling all day long they've just been dying to use the "D word" and try to smear Laura with it.
They seem to love to be typing "masturbation" and "penis" and "jerking off" over and over.
Howlin, what are you doing defending Laura?. Doncha know she needs to put on her burkha and go back to the ladies quarters at the White House instead of acting like a brazen hussy. You could have predicted this sort of thing from a society that would let a woman get a degree in library science. All those books put these crazy ideas in her head. And she's a Methodist to boot. They went to the dark side when they allowed women preachers. See where that sort of thinking takes society???
It will be interesting to see how some FReepers respond to raunchy jokes from Democrats/leftists from now on.
Take care.
