'Anti-gay' students must keep quiet

In its mandatory "diversity training" classes, a school district has instructed students who believe homosexual behavior is wrong to keep their opinions to themselves, prompting a federal lawsuit.

The Arizona-based Alliance Defense Fund filed a motion for preliminary injunction [PDF file] yesterday to immediately prohibit the Boyd County, Kentucky, Board of Education from restricting the free-speech rights of its students.

"We are filing this motion because students are being forbidden from expressing their own viewpoint on this matter," said ADF Senior Legal Counsel Kevin Theriot. "That's unconstitutional, and it must stop."

The motion was filed in a Feb. 15 lawsuit brought by Timothy Allen Morrison and other students and their parents against the education board.

The training itself began as a result of the settlement of another lawsuit filed against the board by the Boyd County High School Gay-Straight Alliance, represented by the American Civil Liberties Union.

"The school district is attempting to change the beliefs of students without their parents' consent," Theriot said. "The provisions of any settlement arrangement must respect the constitutional rights of students."

All middle and high school students in Boyd County schools are required to attend the special training.

School policies and practice do not permit parents to opt their children out of the training, even if it violates their personal beliefs and morality, ADF said.

Wow, shocking. The schools have gone from promotion of gays to forced indoctrination. Very bold that they would even try such a move. And it was inspired by the ACLU? Great civil liberties move there.

It seems the school policy is teaching a religion, contrary to the liberals vaunted separation of church and state. Any time "all students" must attend a session involving discussion and cannot voice disagreement with what is taught there will be trouble. I would personally pre-train my son/daughter to stand up and have that discussion. I would stay away from religious concerns since they are personal and not as wide reaching as the fact that this is a dangerous lifestyle and one that we as a society would be wise NOT to embrace. What parent hopes their child will grow up and "pair bond" with a mate that denies centuries of tradition that marriage should be between one man and one woman? Maybe some people will be homosexuals, and certainly they don't deserve abuse, but they don't deserve or require normal acceptance either. Then I would let the school throw out my kids because they violated the school rule. And I would be ready to sue the school over any hint of this affecting school progress or grades.

What a log way we’ve come, from in the closet, to don’t ask don’t tell and now to it’s inevitable conclusion of shut the f*ck up.

This is a long topic and I don't have time right at the minute, but TPTB have a vested interest in labelling kids "ADD". Why? There are likely many reasons.

Do these kids have some brain dysfunction that couldn't be cured or helped with remedies such as: More outside exercise, a good diet, parents who don't divorce, no more watching TV and computer games, no listening to revolting "music", and text books which are not designed to confuse and indoctrinate?

I think so.

Additionally, not all kids learn the same way or have the same innate capabilities. The entire accepted methodlogy of schools' learning system is completely, totally broken. Bring back apprenticeships in adolescence. I could go on and on. But this "ADD" crap is just that - crap.

You put kids into the situations I described above, and ADD would disappear in 99% of the cases.

I await that day where they can be ordered: BACK INTO THE CLOSET.

Actually, I await the day where the truth that "You don't need to be gay" is shouted loud and clear. When the stories of former homosexuals are heard, and kids who are faced with temptation or confusion are told the truth, not "gay" indoctrination.

An excellent response to the problem. We homeschool!

You should get a rebate for what you pay in education taxes.

Just because you send your children to private school or even home school assume that you have protected yourself and your children. Those vast majority of students in public school are going to grow up and surround your children.

Those children will work in the personel departments and will become fast tracked. Not because they are smart, just the opposite. They will be praised for their PC Thoughts.

In fact look form more efforts to actually isolate or corral private and homeschooled students from being compared to public school students.

Even if you pull you kids out of public school you children are still in danger. If they can force mandatory indoctrination in public schools they could easily turn around and find some tax or regulatory requirement to extend it to home and private schools at some later point in time.

(I still seriously think the no-opt out clause was included because the plaintiffs and the "defendants" were of the same goal.)

Does anyone know if School districts disclose how many students are "phantom students" in their budgets? Private school students which they include in the budget requests?

Perhaps if they were forced to calculate according to actual attendees, it would put some budget pressure on them.

That's an interesting read, thanks. This line was great:
...and I will tell you, sir, if every one who professes to be a Christian lived and acted and enjoyed it as he does, the religion of Christ would take the world by storm.
For the record, when I said some taxes are necessary to help those who can't help themselves I was thinking of the mentally ill.

Wouldn't that be nice. It's not going to happen but it would be nice.

I believe it's a fairly complicated issue:

And other similar issues.

That would free up quite a few resources the public school could use to better educate those who can't homeschool.

I think you're missing the point. The public schools need genuine competition to spur them to better use the vast sums of money they have.

Allowing the public schools to continue their monopoly grip on taxpayer monies while taking away the burden to teach the home schoolers is the most perverse solution of all because it will only encourage the public school to be more slothful and liberal than they presently are.

Until and unless the public schools have to compete across the board for students and money, we will continue to see low test scores and taxpayer-subsidized leftist indoctrination in the classroom.

The last time we were in the process, in order to adopt in our county we were encouraged to take a class on diversity training, which includes, gay, bisexual, homosexual, etc issues. It may be required now. And from what I remember, we were told that if a child appeared or stated an interest in homosexuality, we were not allowed to tell them any different.

Actually you're missing the point of what public schools were originally for. Read The Underground History of American Education and A Thomas Jefferson Education. Post 20 contains some very revealing information.

Foil the government-backed indoctrination plan! Homeschool your kids.

I encourage people to homeschool their children. At the same time, however, we cannot afford to write off the public schools.

Most people will choose not to homeschool. I worry about their children. Our nation cannot afford a generation of poorly educated citizens who have not been taught to read or write or think, but have been throughly indoctrinated by the Left.

So long as we are all forced to pay dearly for the public schools, we have every right to demand that are money be well spent.

The schools works for the taxpayer (at least in the sense that they would not exist but for the taxpayer) but now they think they can "mandate" their employer to do what they want them to do, and to think and act like they want them to.

In another case somewhat resembling this one in Texas, a school decided that they would automaticaly exclude students from ANY extracurricular activities whose parents did not attend a war on drugs education meeting.

Are they out of control? No doubt about it.
