STATE OF THE UNION -- 2005 [Live Thread]
2/2/05

Posted on 02/02/2005 3:43:44 PM PST by Timeout

The pre-spin: Bush will spend about 1/2 the speech on foreign policy, 1/2 on domestic, with heavy emphasis on Social Security reform. It's said he will provide a detailed tutorial on the SS system and its problems with a few details on his personal accounts proposal.

Laura's guests are said to be an Afghan voter and an Iraqi voter (too bad there's no Ukrainian wearing an orange hat!).

Should we start a drinking game on how many times the pool camera swings to Hillary? Hmmm. Probably not...it would likely hamper out typing ability.

Word on the blogs has it that the closing part of the speech is a hum-dinger. Set your VCR's.

Report here on outrageous MediaCrat spin before AND after the SOTU. Pictures and screen caps welcome.

i defend almost all conservative when warranted and I never defended her comments......i disagree with them but what I said is that people can make mistakes or be wrong and still be on our side.......all the other Repub pundits for the most part have moved on and still consider her a friend and supporter........how many times in the past has she dissed the Pres? ......I don't see her as a hypocrite.....maybe wrong but not a hypocrite in the true sense of the word

I think I read somewhere that L. Sanchez borrowed that last name, and is not a Latino.....by birth.

This was the best part of the President's address. I think one theme undergirded the entire speech: human freedom. The freedom of people to choose their own governments and the freedom to manage their own lives, emphasized in deciding how you want to retire as opposed to the government managing that for you like its always been. Its a new world and the Democrats are for the first time, on the defensive.

Quick! Someone should drag the whale back out to sea before it dries off!

What I wanna know is how did it manage to beach itself on a pier?!

Maybe it's not admirable, but when people cross a line as I feel she did, I tend to hold a grudge. She made the problem worse by suggesting she would have been even more harsh if she could do it over again.

As I said, her attitude set me off. I am convinced it was rooted in jealousy and I have zero tolerance for that motivation.

I'm 34 years old and I think President Bush's SS plan is long overdue.

The RATS better realize this is probably the last chance to reform and save SS. If they keep yelling there's no problem and win on this, it will be IMPOSSIBLE to make any rational changes in the system before it hits the wall. They will destroy it out of pure partisan bile. If Clinton had offered the exact same reforms they would have been on their knees for him.

I think they must believe that all of those about to retire in the next few years will see it their way.....they can change their position in a few years as people always forget what they said yesterday!

"Rich" geezers get nothing. Write that down.

Couldn't agree more.

Means-testing SS makes perfect sense.

Nothing would make the system solvent faster than that.

A big goal. One as as achievable as putting a man on the moon. And one with much more meaning to our lives and day to day future security. A world of free nations will take the human race to heights previous generations could only dream of. America's ideals are setting an example for the rest of mankind.

As an antidote to those 2 pictures, can you post the pics of Bush in his flight suit and the one of him making the perfect baseball pitch? I need those sugar plumes in my head as I drift off to sleep tonight. LOL

Yup, the idea cannot be ignored, because it is true, and folks more and more are understanding that. IMO. Bush even more clearly outlined a new American foreign policy than he did in his Inaugural Address and named names, including Saudi Arabia. Stunning. Absolutely stunning. Granted it involves risk, but in the long term, prudently taken risk. Bush has it right.

I think the Dems forget that the younger generation have parents. Those parents want their children to be taken care of, and they know S.S. is not stable.

The only ones rejecting calls are the oldest citizens. But, they are our grandparents. It's not like we want to toss them on the streets.

Unfortunately, at least one of the plans included continuing the Social Security tax throughout the years, instead of cutting off the tax after a certain level. Years ago, it was $60K, now it's $90,000. So people get 6% more of their salary after that point. Or 12% if they're self-employed, and/or employers save that 6% for those employees. That money can make a big difference for small business and the self-employeed.

Miss Maple......you are not getting what i"m saying...forget her comments for now.....what I'm saying is that even if she made a mistake, why do you not forgive and move on. She rarely if ever disagrees with the Pres or the Admin.. Why do you villify her on this one speech. that is all I ask, one time and you attack her......
