Why not just wait and do the investigation posthumiously?

. . . to investigate the 1997 incident.

Oh, please!!! It was 7 years ago. Leave it alone. Statute of limitations and all that rubbish.

If this is all our politicians have to do with our money is to play political sniping games, then let them stay home and get real jobs.

This is ludicrous!!!

And, NO, I'm NOT a big Jim McDermott fan. I just think this is a stupid waste of tax dollars.

Jim Mc Dermott went to Baghdad together with Sean Pen to meet with Saddam Hussein.
He criticized President Bush from Baghdad in front of wide open TV cameras.
Jim Mc Dermott convincingly earned himself the name of
"Baghdad Jim."

This'll go nowhere. Only 7 years after the fact? Wow, the US Congresscritters are really moving on it, aren't they?

This is one more example of the fact that "House Ethics Committee" is an oxymoron. This event happened SEVEN years ago in 1997. What McDermott did was plainly a violation of the criminal law.

House Ethics did nothing at the time. Why has it stuck its head up so late in the game? Because the law suit has succeeded against McDermott in civil court at the appeals level. In short, the real world has rubbed the nose of House Ethics in the mess it has made on the carpet.

They are setting up to do something, anything, now to try to sweep under the rug a situation of one Member recovering serious damages from another Member for what the latter did in violation of criminal and civil law. House Ethics? BFD.

to investigate the 1997 incident

A tad late, don't ya think? Why not investigate some more recent ethics violations? I'm sure, if you look, you can come up with a few ----- dozen.

Why just McDermott? What not 90% of the democratic party caucus? Is it ethical to be a communist and anti-American?

Oh, I know, Free Speech! Anti-American activists do not belong in Congress!

Gee, the House "Ethics" Committee doesn't have a 7-year statute of limitations? Well, at least this silly "investigation" of scumbag McDermott might keep some of the House members out of other mischief. Like spending, spending, spending....

I'm perfectly happy to take what I can get. If they nail Baghdad Jim with a seven-year-old offense, that's just fine with me. It's like what they used to say to us as kids when we were punished for something we didn't do: "Well, if you didn't do it, just consider it as punishment for something you DID do!" McDermott has done more than enough other things to deserve any punishment he gets.

They do have the excuse that what was once an allegation is now a proven crime, although I think even that angle could have been dealt with some time ago.

Seven years, schmeven years....who cares?

I love this whole scenario as it will put the House Ethics Committee into a hysterical tizzy trying to find a loophole in the rules so their bud can get off.

So what if he's already been found guilty in a court of law. The Law and ethics are two wholly different things, doncha know?

The House ethics committee will investigate Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., to determine whether he violated standards of conduct when an illegally recorded telephone conversation was leaked to reporters during a committee investigation.

Well, it's about damn time!

McDermott was ranking Democrat on the ethics committee at the time,

Which is all you need to know about DemoRats.

while the committee is at it, why don't they investigate possible connections between McDermott and the obvious election fraud committed in King County to snatch the governorship from duly elected Republican Dino Rossi. McDermott's constituents are exactly the sorts who vote twice or thrice under names of all their multiple personalities.

Baghdad Jim is not my rep, thank goodness, if I thought this would in any way, shape or form get him out of the house, I might be more excited, but seven years after the fact it will be a tempest in a teapot.

He's worthless, but the people in his district (7th) don't get it, and will keep voting him in.

Just for info to show what a butthead he really is.

May 1, 2004 Rep. Jim McDermott Assailed for Omitting God from Pledge of Allegiance

On April 27, Representative Jim McDermott, Democrat from Seattle, was given an assignment by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's office: Open the House session with the obligatory recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, a task that rotates among House members.

When McDermott delivered the pledge, he omitted saying the words "Under God," and that created an uproar.

Representative Pete Sessions, Republican of Texas, blamed McDermott for "embarrassing the House and disparaging the majority of Americans who share the values expressed in the pledge," ....more here

IMO, the house ethics committee has a different definition of ethics than I do; it probably will come to naught.

McDermott? Wasn't he one of the Slime-Ball Senators who went to Iraq before the war in support of Saddam, and slammed the US and Bush?
