Two parents, shocked at frank talk during a gay and lesbian awareness day at Newton North High, were forced off the property after one parent whipped out a video camera and started taping.
``This does not belong in curriculum,'' said Kim Cariani, who said four police officers and the principal told them they would be charged with trespassing if they did not leave.
``It's against my religion. It's morally wrong and forced in a child's face.''
Each year, some students at Newton North forgo classes during To BGLAD: Transgender, Bisexual, Gay and Lesbian Awareness Day with assembly-like sessions including ``Out at the Old Ballgame'' and ``Color Me Queer.'' Students are not required to attend.
Cariani kept her two kids home during the day, but she was curious.
Cariani and another parent, Brian Camenker, were in the audience when adults in a panel discussion talked about being gay. When one man told the students he was attracted to his sister's husband, Cariani said she started to record the ``propaganda, false information and lies.''
The principal demanded Cariani turn over the videotape or leave, Camenker said.
``They took the two of us and pulled us out and gave us one minute to leave and if we came back on the property we would be arrested for trespassing,'' he said.
Tom Mountain, a columnist for the Newton Tab, was also barred from the assembly ``for the safety and security of the children,'' he said he was told.
Newton schools Superintendent Jeff Young said it is a violation of school policy to tape or photograph students without parental permission. Cariani refused to give up the tape, so they were asked to decamp, he said.
The awareness day, held for the past 10 years, is one of several ways the schools highlight diversity, Young said. Students who don't want to go can go to the library or computer lab.
Fine with me, so long as students could opt out. Maybe not the graphic pictures, though.
Lamest of lame. The "gay" agenda doesn't intertest you and that's why you post on these threads..... [lj scratches head].
There's lots of books, so this particular book means nothing.
Aren't you embarrassed to be so transparent?
Exactly! When government school administrators tell the people paying them that they are not allowed one has to wonder what's going on. Why do the liberal school administrators have things to hide?
Sure, all the kids at athletic contests, shool plays, and dances have filed parental waivers to be taped or photographed. Jeff Young is a liar in full CYA mode.
The ACLU fights FOR this.
That still doesn't add up to a gay agenda. A simple expanation is that this book was basically detailing what was already going on in society as perceptions on homosexuality changed.
I've never seen this book, so I can only assume that your description of it is correct.
What is going on is that the vast majory of people just shrug and ignore the problem. They don't take any activist action to push back as such extremists, so the latter keep taking more and more ideological ground.
While conservatives are winning at the national elective level, they are losing badly in most local battles like this.
You can get all the info you want on these programs at Article 8 .org. Then you will know what is being taught there. Also on massnews.com
Some people don't want information.
Think they are members of the NEA and they are. Unfortunately, it's a left wing organization. MA is trying to get "opt out" legislation inacted, for these programs. And the lady with the video camera..........she has every right in any public school to see a program and the information contained in it, before she lets her children attend. Which is what, as a responsible parent she was doing.
One example of the agenda was the effort seven or eight years ago to have the book "Heather Has Two Mommies" placed in the children's reading section of public libraries rather than in the parenting section, as recommended by the American Library Association.
This was a classic example of picking on the weak and it resulted in well-heeled gay groups attacking cash-poor libraries and the towns that supported them. The costs of defending their positions caused libraries to lay off personnel, scrap book-buying plans and in some cases close.
Hormel, the guy Clinton named to be ambassador to Luxembourg, was a major bankroller of this effort and for that reason was opposed by Jesse Helms and others. Clinton called Helms all kinds of names like homophobic but Helms, IMO, had the moral upper hand.
They are not the same person.
So the media says, unfortunately "opt out" letters were not sent home, as they should have been. This is not the first such program, and the people (activists) who run them, say it's dtoo difficult to coordinate the sending home of letters.
The current bill is making stronger language of that law, so the will have to. And so they won't be able to harrass the parents or students who do opt out.
By the same token, they are taxpayers in that town, and are forced to pay for this school, so should be entitled to see and document what goes on on public property - especially since they have PAID FOR IT.
don't know what would happen but it's needed!
She'd already chosen to opt her children out before the program started.
Well YES they should be, and thats why they DON"T want it taped. They do not want the general public to know what is really going on in these schools. Saying you can't film students without psrents permission, while true, is a convenient excuse, and a fall back on cop out
