New theory on Stonehenge mystery
Experts believe the stones may have been levered into place
A fresh theory on how Stonehenge was built has been tested out by a group of experts and enthusiasts. Gordon Pipes, of the Stonehengineers group of scientists and archaeologists, has suggested that levers may have been used to move the giant stones.
They have tested his "stone-rowing" theory which involves a 45-tonne stone being levered on a track of logs.
"It's akin to rowing a boat, weights can be picked up with levers using body mass and balance," said Mr Pipes.
Mr Pipes, from Derby, combined his interest in prehistory and his skills as a carpenter to test his idea.
The method is said to require little effort and be just as efficient whether uphill, downhill or on level ground.
Many theories have been put forward for the engineering of Stonehenge, including the belief that the stones were dragged or rolled into place.
Mr Pipes is planning more experiments on Salisbury Plain next summer in an effort to prove his suggestion.
They will involve attempts to move two blocks, weighing 10 tonnes and 40 tonnes, half a mile in a day.
Doh! A full ten minutes too.
Couldn't believe it. What makes it better though is that blam posted both articles.
I was there. Took the bus from Salisbury to there and nearby, Bath, the Roman Baths.
Wasn't that place full of trees hundreds of years ago? Before they were harvested for shipbuilding? I remember there was a war where a forest was burned between there and Inverness. Vague, distant memories of knowledge I didn't pay much attention too when I should have.
BTW, Those rocks are now fenced in because a bunch of idiots spray-painted graffiti all over them at one time.
I didn't see the video segment on his site now. Probably was too much bandwidth. But it was awesome. He could move the really huge block one "step" length in just seconds with one hand.
The ancients had lifetimes and generations to figure this stuff out.
Not necessarily a joke. There was a civilization prior to ours. The ice age seperates time. 10K years of entropy leaves no trace. Except for a "?".
Jesus' angels moved giant stones all over the world.......'go roll a stone' when nor lifting or flying them,......use all six wings technique....
And you my love
Won't you take my hand
We'll go back in time
To that mystic land
Where the dew drops cry
And the cats meow
I will take you there
I will show you how...
I sure hope he doesn't live in a glass house, for as we all know:"People who live in glass houses shouldn't row stones".
I'm trying to stay incognito..Hillary and Bill don't know me by my Freeper identity..
Oh, for God's sake, this is idiocy!!!
Scotty beamed the stones in place and Khan tried to destroy them.
(Didn't these people see that episode of Star Trek?)
Yes, this can be done. The fulcrum, or fulcrums have to bear the weight, kind of a grinding action, and they can be attached through a pivot to the lever so the mechanism can be moved easily. Balance would be important, but a couple of rollers could absorb any out of balance weight up to a point. Get the weight off the ground in the first place and then you are off and running. Well, maybe not running. Slow, but faster than sitting and staring.
Yup. Things were hopping on Sundaland during the Ice Age...and then it went underwater and everyone scattered all over the world.
To those in the know, that remains the only theory!
CA....
Not that way. The magnetic fields and spatial orientation of our planet's axis was different at one time. You can't get fish fossils in mountains otherwise.
A couple of years ago the History channel had a special, showing just this idea. They had a crew of about 50 or so people using winches and levers to tow the stones over logs from a quarry many miles away.
Whats up with these guys......need they're 15 minutes I guess
We may have discussed this on an earlier thread, but I totally agree about Wallington -- he would have made a heck of an engineer -- if the profs didn't ruin him! '-)
I have his videos here on my laptop, and every time I see him effortlessly roll that square-section counterweight stone along the top of the big stone, (using his "round road" [sinusoidal track]) I can't help but laugh at his brilliant ingenuity!
Darn, why didn't I think of that?
