During the U.S. president’s official visit to Canada on November 30 and December 1, the White House rejected an invitation for Bush to address a joint session of the House of Commons and the Senate. According to sources, the Parliamentary appearance was declined to avoid booing which was expected from some of the “Honourable” Members.
Bush will of course meet with Prime Minister Martin and, according to protocol, will meet with Stephen Harper as leader of the Official Opposition. But NDP leader Jack Layton and Bloq Quebecois leader, Gilles Duceppe will not have the opportunity to meet with the American president.
While Paul Martin was in Africa last week trumping one world government or whatever he was doing, he told the media that he wasn’t worried about the protests that would be awaiting George Bush’s arrival in Ottawa. According to Martin, the U.S. president is an experienced politician who can handle protests.
Even taking into account that the hatred of George Bush results in much greater protests than the three or four losers who stand on Parliament Hill to protest the one or two social programs that Martin hasn’t thrown enough money at, Martin is probably right. Now that we have established that Bush is not afraid of protests, the declining of the invitation to address Parliament must have been taken for another reason. . . . .

Since you brought up the recent elections ... did you bother to compare the results to the those of the election in 2000? The shift has started ... I just wish it would proceed faster.
I would not for one minute minimize the good that the Harper meeting could have. Like the US, Most of Sask, Alb, and Ontario are pretty conservative already.
Bush and Rove may be able to take Harper under their wing to establish some sort of power dialogue between Canada and the US.
If you can't establish a formal cooperation between the US and Canada, you can set Harper up to be the guy that needs to be dealt with in all matters requiring US cooperation.
That would be a start.
I see absolutely no reason why the President should submit himself to abuse by a bunch of idiotic uber-liberal Canuckleheads. President Bush refused to address the NAALCP for the very same reasons.
Screw Canada!!! I hope the President takes the opportunity to tell Paul Martin that our Nortern Border will close 5 minutes after Air Force One hits American Airspace. Maybe then Canuckistan will come to terms with the fact that they are the biggest Security Threat that our Country faces. When they decide to defend themselves, and join our side in the War on Terror, we can talk about re-opening our common border.
Until then, they can eat all of that softwood that they are cutting and dumping on our markets.

Waaaaaay off subject - but I read it in a book last night. Bush takes his "wearing a suit in the oval office" policy so strong that even late at night in his casual clothes, if he needs to go down the stairs to the oval office just to get some documents he forget he'll put on his suit and tie!

OK, the numbers are off, but there are still more NYPD cops than Canadian military. NYPD patrols a CITY! Do you realize New York City could invade and defeat the entire country of Canada? (We know you guys ain't got no guns). If you think a couple of trappers are going to pull blunderbusses from the mantle in their log cabins will help you, then we would only have to get the upstate NY hunters (with precision high-tech rifles) to even that out.
We are carrying your water and you don't even have the pretense of being self-reliant. By comparison, France with a population of ~59 million has apx. 140,000 troops, compared with your admitted 24,000.

first of all there are plenty around that ARE bashing all Canadians. Just look through some of the threads about Canada. Maybe they don't mean "all" but they don't say so.
and how many years did it take to get us where we are now. The Dems ran everything for the last 50 years. Maybe we should give the Canadians just a little more time.

We should respect Canada for sending troops to Afghanistan, like so many other nations they could have refused.
If we want our friends to help us in the future we might try and show a little more gratitude.
I've said it before and will say it again--Canada is the best neighbor we could have, a real class act of a country. And on the practical side they are the market for 20% of our exports, mainkly added value goods. A lot of people in all parts of the country would hate to see our friendly Canadian customers decide to stop buying American.

At least ONE THIRD of Canadians are good conservatives, don't wrecklessly generalize and piss off friends... if you did a 'red/blue country map' of Canada you would see its similar to the US in that except for Ontario (big city/high density), the majority of the country is conservative (of course not the far E)
