Condi: Why I Support the Second Amendment
Secretary of State nominee Dr. Condoleezza Rice is a big supporter of the second amendment, a commitment cultivated during her days growing up in Bull Conner's Birmingham, Alabama, when the shotgun wielded by her father was often the only thing that stood between her family and the Ku Klux Klan.
In 1963, racial violence was "turning her hometown into 'Bombingham' as Alabamas governor George Wallace fought a federal court order to integrate the citys schools," writes Rice biographer Antonia Felix.
Story Continues Below
In excerpts of her book "The Condoleezza Rice Story," reprinted in the London Sunday Times, Felix recounts:
"With the bombings came marauding groups of armed white vigilantes called 'nightriders,' who drove through black neighborhoods shooting and starting fires. [Condi's father] John Rice and his neighbors guarded the streets at night with shotguns.
"The memory of her father out on patrol lies behind Rices opposition to gun control today. Had those guns been registered, she argues, Bull Connor would have had a legal right to take them away, thereby removing one of the black communitys only means of defense."
"I have a sort of pure second amendment view of the right to bear arms," said the future Secretary of State.
I really like Condi.
Picking at nits........Canada Geese!!
So far so good......
Condi, we need to have a talk about rights and powers. People have rights and governments have powers. In GOOD governments, like the one our founding fathers established, the government has only those powers which the people give it and under our Constitution, they knew that bad people would sometimes come to power. So they put in the Second Amendment to guarantee that the people would have the means to resist them.
Bull Conner NEVER, EVER had the right or even legitimate power to take your daddy's gun simply to ensure he would be unarmed.
Git back, Jack!
I've already sent her my picture and asked her to marry me!
(Well, it was actually a picture of The Rock, but maybe she won't know...)
She knows the 2nd ain't about goose hunting.
Go on, tell me again why she's not qualified to be nominated for VP and POTUS. C'mon, tell me again how it would only be a "gimmick".
One more point in her favor. She has experience of the practical application of the Second Amendment (which I think few white politicians have ever had). Good for her and thank you to the father who had the courage to exercise the right in the face of real government persecution.
And this, gentle reader, is why the Second Amendment -- "contrary to what the Democrats claim -- is NOT about hunting.
Gun control isn't about guns. It's about control."
or as some say, "Politicians prefer unarmed peasants."
I bet she even knows where she can get her a huntin license too.
Every American should read that story to understand WHY we have the Second Amendment.
I really respect Doctor Rice. She is so intelligent! Why dont more black people like her!??!? Principal i guess. Shes a Repub so shes the enemy. To me that would show that the best and brightest go to that team not stay on the team that keeps us down...
My view is that Condi's childhood ordeals only made her stronger! I admire and respect that about her. As Secretary of State, her internal strengh will serve her (and us) well.
Drawing a handgun and firing at a target that's more than 230 years away? Friend, a handgun's for close personal defense, and for fighting your way back to cover and your rifle!
But in general, I agree with the concept, and I've got an M-14 that I can open fire with at 300 yards! lol
Actually, your post made me remember something from my youth. I used to go out to the 300 yard range with my .44 magnum Redhawk, and I'd shoot at a manhole cover that was suspended from between two posts. IIRC, even with a 180gr jhp load, moving at around 1800fps, I still needed to hold more than 10 feet over the top of the target!
