I do believe you are correct and the Chief Justice has to be picked from existing SC justices.

Not when Eisenhower put Earl Warren up as Chief Justice (as his reward for delivering Ike the nomination in '52, with Dick Nixon the go-between getting the VP slot).

Of course Ike said later on that he regretted it, but that may have just been a lot of squid ink. He could obfuscate with the best of them.

I think Ashcroft has done a superb job with Justice, and I wish him well in his retirement. He is a fine man.

I agree Thud. We need Karl Rove in CA. Imagine dividing the Blue precints, educating their population on Dem doublespeak and corruption, single issue activists that keep stripping away our liberties, and paint the picture clearly, of the future their children will NOT have. However, it might be easier to saw off the coastal areas with a butter knife.

Agreed. Good choice. Marc had already stepped out of public life and Bush convinced him to get back in and run the RNC. Bush is very good at spotting good talent and getting them to take on more responsibility. Bush is growing the next round of leaders.

Rudy is probably the second most admired figure responding to 9/11. Respected and well known, and I think might move through the confirmation process rather well. Crime Fighter!!

I must admit, I really liked John Ashcroft. Without him, the Gorelick wall, might still exist. He really stuck it up the 9/11 Commissions backside with that. He's to be respected for his gentle courage... IMHO.

That's what the 'Rat demonstrators were saying last spring, when they were taunting Perry to "come on out, Rick! We'll support you!" The story was that Perry got caught in flagrante, and the Austin American-Statesman got the story. Mrs. Perry toed the line (looking like she was going to urp), Gov. Perry asked for a meeting with the newspaper's top people, and some kind of deal was struck to kill the story. I don't know what the deal was, but I haven't heard yet about Sixth Street in Austin getting a Toll of Boys.

I wouldn't suggest otherwise. His record in NY speaks for itself.

But you can see that, as an AG compelled to argue for existing precedents on abortion rights or in upholding DOMA, he might be rather conflicted given his own established political positions.

Of course, Ashcroft isn't all that different in being forced to represent the Justice department and defend abortion rights before the Court, even if he is pro-life.

I think Rudy would be excellent at Homeland Security. It was his city that got hit. And he also tends to think outside the box, a good quality for a new government department. He also knows the problems of enforcement and ethnicity in big cities with harbors. And those are the most likely terrorist targets.

I'd be happy to see Rudy at Homeland. A little less as AG.

Of course, if he intends to run in '06 against Hillary or even in '08 for prez, he won't be serving in either post. Something tells me that Rudy is shooting for something big like governor or senator or even president. He's a smart ambitious man.
