I am thinking of running for office (Big Vanity with lights)
Myself ^ | November 4 | Moi

Posted on 11/04/2004 3:34:38 PM PST by MissouriConservative

While I was casting my vote here in Kansas City, I looked at my state representative race for the Missouri House...and noticed that only one person was on the ballot and it was a democrat to boot. No Republican was running....and I was ashamed.

After talking with my lovely Mrs. MissouriConservative, I have reached a decision....I am going to run for the 44th district here in Missouri in 2006.

I know there are a few Freepers here in KC and would love to have them help in way they can. I am going to join a lot of local Republican clubs and begin networking. I not only need the physical help, but a lot of prayers and spiritual guidance. We cannot let a democrat run unopposed, no matter how democratic the district may be.

I am currently studying my opponent to be, and she has a lot of weaknesses....voting for medical pot usage, still trying to get Missouri to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, etc.

This district is changing, albeit slowly, and more people are moving to the suburbs and voting is slowly trending towards conservatives.

Whatcha all think?

Don't hold your breath for an apology. You solicited on FR loud and clear.

You can't lawyer your way out of this. It's well known what you were doing.

So, you keeping all that lovely cash for your next failed 'almost ran'?

I was a campaign manager for a state representative candidate 4 years ago. I had quite a bit of grass-roots experience, but not a lot of campaign management experience...but with the limited budget and resources, it was all he could afford.
I would recommend going to any campaign schools and networking with more than just local Republican organizations. Join Lions, Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, Rotary, type clubs in your neighborhood to meet more people. Listen to what they say...what issues are important to them...don't talk too much (a weakness that I have), but sincerely listen to the issues that are concerning them and how they propose they be addressed. Formulate campaign strategy/platforms based on your neighborhood opinion. Wave to your neighbors, talk to them, interact with them...they can be your best supporters or your worst enemies.
Keep your closet clean and keep positive. I also recommend that you get yourself onto some community boards like a library board, a police board, or other citizen committees...it is a great way to get to know people, get your name out there, and increase name recognition. Write a few letters to the editor and volunteer.
Remember that running for office is opening your life up to scrutiny. Don't wear your emotions on your sleeve, but develop a thick skin really early because political campaigns have turned into slug fests.

Good luck...I encourage and support you. Feel free to contact me by Freep mail if you want more specifics. Good luck and thanks for being busy and dedicated to the conservative cause.

"If you follow the course of that threat, you find out that per a discussion with Jim Robinson it was revised. Any requests for donations were deleted and not made again."

More BS. The "threat" is still a very elaborate and detailed request for money for yourself from the Freepers:

Successful campaigns must have two things. First is a minimum of dedicated and able volunteers. The other is money.

A "Double Sawbuck" is $20. When I started selling newspapers at the age of 15, that represented ten days of hard work, every day. Nowadays, that just ain't much money. Twice times a movie ticket, plus a bucket of popcorn and two overpriced drinks. A fast-food dinner for the family, with maybe enough left over for a couple ice cream cones.

If you are like me, and like most citizens of the Internet, you sit down at the keyboard with your credit card in your pocket. You do that even if you're sitting there in your bathrobe with a pair of fuzzy slippers on your feet. Why?

Because the Internet is not just a window on the world, not just a cornucopia of intellectual delights; it is also a shopping mall that offers everything you can imagine, and then some. Like Clint Eastwood as The High Plains Drifter riding into a new town, you have your credit card easy on your hip, ready to fire when necessary. Good.

Click on the website. Click on the "response link" on the right side middle of the first page. Use our secure server to contribute what you choose. And be certain to leave your name and address. I have special ways of saying thank you that require snail mail. No, your name and address will NEVER be given to anyone else for any reason. And if I do not win the election, I will burn the list and eat the ashes. Is that sufficient protection?

I am well aware of the parable in the Bible about the "Widow's Mite." It was the smallest coin in the realm, yet it was all that she could give. And so it was a welcome gift. I only have a small list of people who can and will "max out" under the Federal Election Commission rules and give $2,000. That list is small because I have restricted it just to individuals and just to those who don't ask for favors in return.

All the rest of the necessary money must come from thousands of smaller contributions. One hundred people who give a double sawbuck equal one more maximum donor. It all adds up. No one wins with just large contributions. No one wins with just small contributions. It takes both.

If you know me well, so you didn't have to do a great deal of reading to come up to speed, this has taken about five minutes. In return I offer you sixty years of experience at the local, state and national level, compressed into two years of excellent work in Congress.

There, now you've done something about Congress, rather than just talking about it. Doesn't it make you feel good?

Why lie about it?

My favorite passage.

If you run, be prepared to spend $30,000 and to knock on 15,000+ doors.

If you're in the Kansas City area, that's what it will take to have any shot at winning.

You are quoting from one of my 435 national weekly columns. I post those on FR as "Special to FreeRepublic." Most people have appreciated those, and said so. If you wish to avoid my byline, don't click on them.

I think it is a bit much that you should imply that I should not post a column on FR, which is also published nationally, because you personally don't like it.

As for the broader point, anyone who can walk and chew gum knows that it takes serious money to run for public office at the state or federal level. Practical warnings to people who are thinking about doing that, but don't have a clue about the mechanical process, can be helpful.

Every year for the 435 seats in the House there are thousands of hopeless candidates. These are people who file, print a few bumper stickers, and think that makes them candidates. Experienced people can look in the FEC data and spot right away the candidates who are road kill from the get-go.

National and state political parties tend to steer clear of such candidates. They might even have the party label because they won its nomination in a so-what primary. (For example: Joe Biden is a bum, IMHO. However, whoever won the Republican nomination in Delaware won a so-what primary.)

I have a feeling that HillarysLovelyLegs won a so-what primary, was road kill, and got her knickers in a twist because the Party wouldn't ride to her rescue. People who don't understand the process of running for office can get quite upset when reality doesn't square with their gross misconceptions.

Anyone who writes a national column about politics, but doesn't talk accurately about money in politics, is a fool. I do write a national column on politics. I've done so for almost ten years. If that upsets you, start writing your own column and stop reading mine.

Have a nice day,

Congressman Billybob

So sez a phony who has never run for office about a person who has run at least twice.

LOL

Insult away, small man.

The party not running to my rescue? Why did they have to? I got more votes than Bush in most of my cities.

The President, First Lady and Vice President personally endorsed me.

I had the endorsement of my party chair and the RNCC ( Republican National Congressional Committee) had begged me to run for two years.

I know what it takes to run. My showing was outstanding.

I have been fielding calls from all over the country about my next plan of action. The emails are pouring in from people who want me to continue.

Your lack of class and misogynistic comments are well noted. I ran a race and won more votes than the president. I was the one with the coattails.

So when it comes to roadkill, try to get those tiretracks off of your back.

Thank you, I am going to add more photos. I had a great year, met great people and I will add photos of me with the President, the First Lady, Liz and Dick Cheney, Ted Nugent, Stephen Baldwin, Miss America, Don King, Katherine Harris and Rick Lazio.

I just need time to rest since I have been on the go for the past 9 months. As soon as I get a spare minute I will post them for you.

I hope you keep your son out of the sun. It's our enemy.

Also, don't be afraid to tell the dentist that he needs 20% more novicane. Redheads always need 20% anethesia.

Tell me your platform and I'll tell you if I'd vote for you. Of course, I don't live there, but you asked.
