Abolish the IRS with National Sales Tax?
Fox News ^ | 11/3/04 | tgusa

"I'm not exactly sure how big the national sales tax is going to have to be, but it's kind of an interesting idea that we ought to explore seriously," the president said. The next day administration officials said Bush was not considering such a reform.

John Kerry's campaign quickly condemned a national sales tax, and Bush for potentially supporting it.

“If [Bush] has his way, every trip to the supermarket will feel like a visit to H&R Block and every day will be April 15. And now that this plan has been exposed, George W. Bush is trying to mislead the public into thinking it was just an off-the-cuff comment," Kerry spokesman Phil Singer said in an Aug. 12 statement.

We have the mandate to do it now. This is our chance. It has to be pushed now.

Used goods of any kind would not be taxed.

Why don't you ~read~ about how the proposed 'fair tax' would be structured?
It would work if tied to a Constitutional Amendment repealing the income tax, and limiting State & local sales taxes.

I'm for making the Federal Government ask the states for it's revenue

It didn't work from 1776 to 1789 and it doesn't work with the UN asking its member states for money. Why do you think it will work any differently with a NST? -- Unless you actual goal is the destruction of the federal government structure.

So if I work hard and save my after tax money then I get taxed AGAIN when I spend it? Not saying I have the answer, but that appears to be double taxation to me.

Got bad news for you, that is what is happening to you now.

DO YOU PAY YOUR INCOME TAX
AT THE SUPERMARKET?

by D. Sherman Cox J.D. L.L.M. Taxation

Under an NRST, all federal income and payroll taxes would be eliminated removing the front end taxation. Any money placed/retained in savings and investment would not be taxed. Under an NRST nothing is taxed until spent on new goods or services.

Long before the States try to steal the tax receipts from the federal government The People will actually see how much government is costing them and they will revolt and demand deep cuts in federal government bureaucracy.

Once people begin to experience the befits of a NRST, states that do have an income tax will be pressured to eliminate their State income tax in favor of a State Retail Tax. Next The People will demand deep cuts in state government bureaucracies.

Myself and many people on the tax threads have researched the NRST, flat tax in comparison to the income tax. Each of us has come to the independent conclusion that an NRST is more beneficial and effective than a flat tax and eons better than the income tax we now have. Both on an individual income-expenditure level and as a capitalist society on whole

You appear set in your own biased way against learning the greater benefits and effectiveness of an NRST. I'm being honest and would appreciate the same from you. You being biased against an NRST, what's in it for you -- how do you benefit greater -- by retaining the income tax?

Used goods would not be taxed, only new consumer goods.

What about services? Would my handyman service be taxed?

And without the IRS who will enforce collection of the NST? You are replacing one devil with another.

The states, the same folks who enforce collection of retail sales taxes now.

Not unless you are a licensed retailer of new goods.

I make pottery in my garage that I sell at craft fairs (I don't but for sake of argument). Will I be taxed? It's new goods right? Will the clay I buy be taxed? Am I buying it at wholesale or retail? Who will determine that? Who will audit my sales?

Everyone I speak to, who understands the FAIR TAX is in favor of it. My daughter called from SC and wanted to know about it because Jim Demint was running on it as an issue. It is going to grow now that Bush has won. We need to make it happen.

"Unless you actual goal is the destruction of the federal government structure."

If, by "federal government structure" you mean the potion of the federal government that has extended beyond the limited constitutional powers granted to it, leaving the rest to the states, by taxing the population directly and then offering that money to the states in exchange to bowing to federal dictates, then... yes, that is my goal.

All of this talk about tax reform skirts the issue of spending reform. The only reason the IRS is so intrusive is that the congress has sent them at us to satisfy congress's appetite for our money.

Cut the spending and the IRS's reason for being is diminished.

Tell your representatives to change the tax laws, they are the ones who created them.

Why would they do that? They keep what they collect now. Why would they turn it over to the Feds? Who will audit their collection? Are you going to create a new agency to do this?

Let people keep ALL of their income for a fiscal quarter. Then, have them write a check to the IRS at the end of that quarter like I do. There would be a revolt at the end of that quarter. I guaran-damn-tee it.

Not clear why no one on this thread has got my point. I do write simple declarative english sentences. 1) I already paid taxes on what I have saved. 2) Now you propose a sales tax to tax AGAIN what I have worked so hard to put away? 3) I am not a fan of the IRS/income taxes, but is it fair to tax people like me AGAIN?

Aha, good point which I mentioned at the start of the thread. When every American feels the pinch of April 15th every time they spend a dollar, can heat on Congress and the administration to reduce spending be far behind?
