"I'm not exactly sure how big the national sales tax is going to have to be, but it's kind of an interesting idea that we ought to explore seriously," the president said. The next day administration officials said Bush was not considering such a reform.
John Kerry's campaign quickly condemned a national sales tax, and Bush for potentially supporting it.
If [Bush] has his way, every trip to the supermarket will feel like a visit to H&R Block and every day will be April 15. And now that this plan has been exposed, George W. Bush is trying to mislead the public into thinking it was just an off-the-cuff comment," Kerry spokesman Phil Singer said in an Aug. 12 statement.

GET RID OF THE IRS AND THE INCOME TAX!!
I repeat, abolish the 16th Amendment. Read the proposed legislation before you solidify your opinion. The sponsors posit that this legislation would free $5 to $6 trillion (if memory serves) for our economy. But abolition of the 16th Amendment would be ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL.
Excellent. Hope it happens.
Here here from the SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF VERMONT!
There is too much underground going on. I can name at least five people who pay $0 for . . .
Who collects sales tax now? It's a no-brainer. The mechanism is already in place. All it would be is another line on the receipt: Local Sale Tax, State Sales Tax, Federal Sales Tax. Piece of cake.
Why would they do that? Most have a state income tax too, but they don't collect on behalf of the Feds for that. You'll find there will be a lot of resistance to doing so as another "unfunded mandate."
Remember the Articles of Confederation? That was unsuccessful because the states refused to collect taxes on behalf of the Feds. I can imagine that some states who would be opposed to spending from a specific administration might just refuse to send in the money as a protest. Would Massachusetts refuse to send in their fair share so as not to support the war in Iraq?
Asking the states to collect it is a losing proposition.
The states coleect it now and they keep it. What would prevent them from not sending it in? Remember the Articles of Confederation fiasco?
Okay - the admin. is a point of contention. However, it should be discussed.
No, they don't tax your money when you earn, only when you spend it. And you get a consumption allowance, as well.
Read the proposals.
Absolutely! And we should start discussing now, before Hillary gets up a head of steam and we get distracted.
I swear people laugh at me (my friends), I will take a sabbatical (part time) to join the GOP against her. SHE WILL NOT PREVAIL.
The GOP better get going.
It's not an "unfunded mandate". It's funded out of the tax receipts.
I thought we settled the issue of rebellious states 140 years ago, 10th Amendment notwithstanding (obtw, I'm a Virginian). Maybe there has to be something in it for the states - certainly worthy of discussion. I just know what would happen to me if I refused to send in my taxes to the IRS as a protest. There HAS to be a better way than the current system which penalizes productivity.
That is why "consumption" keeps it fair. You spend you pay. Period. Think about it.
Yay, 4 more years is just enough time to get this through if we start right now.
A pox on the IRS - it's outdated like social security and doesn't fit in with our shiny new future.
The Senate just messed themselves in their haste to offer a hundred and sixteen-dozen different targeted tax breaks for business. Is there anyone out there who honestly believes that they will adopt a simple tax system and lose out on the chance to repeat give-aways like that every election year?
What? Just what would that be? What would happen if a state did not send in their sales tax receipts? Do you know anything about the "Articles of Confederation?
The 16th Amendment would have to be repealed before the Fair Tax is implemented; otherwise, we will have both taxes imposed on us either sooner or later. While I support the Fair Tax, I feel Congress would never relinquish its ultimate power to manipulate the tax code for whatever purpose. If the Fair tax is too difficult to implement by repealing the 16th Amendment, we should pass a flat income tax. It is VITAL that the IRS be eliminated with either plan!
