LOCKHART: DEBATE CONSENSUS A 'DRAW'

Unbeknownst to Kerry adviser Mike McCurry, a C-SPAN camera quietly followed McCurry as he found Kerry adviser Joe Lockhart on Spin Alley floor and asked him his impression of the debate. Lockhart candidly said to McCurry , “The consensus is it was a draw.”

Peter Jenning's "fact-checker"?

He caught Kerry saying "$200 billion spent in Iraq already"

ABC's fact-checker said it is only about $120 billion now.

Jennings was more even-handed than I expected

Peter suddenly likes creaming CBS!

Also the CBS "debate poll" was waaaaay more pro-Kerry then others

"I have a plan" turns out to be getting a manicure and showing up to vote in the Senate and Senate Intelligence Committee 14% of the time

14% seems to be a good athletic jersey # for John Kerry and also a good 14% Intelligence score.......

President's don't "keep my eye on the ball" - They have a man to carry it - A President carries the ball when he has to win

Sitting on the bench or off windsurfing 86% of the time is not a winning plan

Kerry shows up 14% of the time

Impressive

Perhaps because Carl Cameron on Fox was gleefully announcing that the media consensus is that Kerry won commandingly. Hope this dispels the lie that FOX is conservative once and for all!

I agree. I posted at the time that the debate would satisfy both camps and sway none. I don't get the swooning defeatism, sky is falling stuff.

Ya'all get a grip!

When you are losing a draw is just not good enough.

That's pretty much what I thought about the debate overall after it was over.I didn't see anything that really stood out as something that would blow either candidate out of the water. It was a draw for the most part, so Kerry loses.

it's kindof a shame really, because I saw several missed opportunities for Bush to hit Kerry where it hurts most. If Bush had really cleaned his clock, the election would be over.

I think it is pretty much over anyway, barring anything really bad/unexpected happening. If it is as obvious to liberals as it is to me, we may well see Nader poll double digits.

2. Regardless of which candidate you happen to support, who do you think did the better job in the debate: John Kerry or George W. Bush?

Kerry 53%, Bush 37%

5. Next, regardless of which presidential candidate you support, please tell me if you think John Kerry or George W. Bush would better handle the situation in Iraq.

Bush 54%, Kerry 43% (Pre-debate: Bush 54%, Kerry 40%)

Typical undecideds are that way because they don't feel pressure to pay attention to the election cycle until the final days of the campaign.

Although, they often break towards the challenger when the decide in the late days. Still, it won't matter if Bush is above 50%/270 electoral -- and it appears he has that number in the polls now. I sincerely doubt if the debate changes any Bush voters into "undecideds" or "Kerrys" -- and not all undecideds will break for one candidate.

The race may tighten, but a tight race in a divided country is essentially irrelevant if we're on the right side of the vote in the end.

Please talk up his reference to giving nuclear material to Iran for "peaceful purposes."

I noticed that too. I guess the Kerry Kamp hasn't learned anything from Slick Willie's Excellent Adventure in North Korea. That's exactly how Peanut Man Carter and the Old Washer Woman set up Kim Jong Ill before he double crossed us.

Bush 54%, Kerry 43% (Pre-debate: Bush 54%, Kerry 40%)

An initial 3-point pickup on undecideds? Doesn't seem like enough to call it a change in momentum, by any means. Some of those in that 3-point pickup will fade in the next day or so, having some buyer's remorse when they're away from the TV screen and start remembering their reservations.

According to an ABC News poll, Bush gained a point in the percentage of Voters that said they would vote for him after watching the debate. Before the debate 50%, after the debate 51%

Yeah, but you gotta remember that homeland defense is Bush's strongest point.

He needs to come out with much more confidence and less hesitation and answer with greater command even moreso now when the debate switches over to domestic issues (the Democrats traditional home turf).

Bush can't afford to let Kerry whittle anything else away from him. Those 1% chunks of wood start adding up quickly.

Except in Presidential elections. They historically side with the incumbent.

BTW, I've also said all along I believe this race is going to be close until Nov. 2nd. Then I think it's going to break wide open.

I think people are going to flirt with change, than reality is going to set in when they have to register a vote.

Me wonders just how "unbeknownst" this was. If you were Hillary Clinton what spin would you want on the debate?

Inquiring minds want to know.
