The poor kid didn't deserve this. I am curious how these kids knew about Mom being a "witch." Is Wicca a religion? More like an alternative lifestyle. Any erudite wiccan conservatives out there care to set me straight?

Has anyone suggested that Momma Witch beat the boy herself, and then came up with this story to garner publicity?

its a religion for people who need to feel more interesting and special than they actually are.

no need to attack them for being loonies, though...

said her faith made her son the target of a hate crime

People like this live to have something like this happen.

She is also probably exagerating or made it up.

"Jesus Hater"?

Doesn't really sound like something a bunch of children would call someone.

If she's a witch, can't she cast some spells against her son's attackers? Shows how empty her beliefs are.

Either way you don't attack the kid. You fire up the stake and burn her then you convert the child and raise him right.

Well at least thats what used to happen ....

"The poor kid didn't deserve this."

Lol, the kid was called names and got a few apples tossed at him.

Do yourself a favor -- make yourself a mug of chamomile tea, then go down to Costcos warehouse and buy yourself a crate of hankies.

"Hate crime" is a ridiculous concept ... just a matter of time before it becomes a "thought crime." The kid was assaulted, period, and the little bastards who did it should have the rotten apples rubbed in their hair and be sent to bed without supper. (Oh, wait, that would warp them, wouldn't it? Further, that is?) And yes, Wicca is a religion. A little odd by my lights, but then, I probably look odd to other people. As for this being a "new" sort of crime -- hah! I spent my whole childhood being pushed around and told I was going to hell by the friendly little baby Baptists at my school, just because my parents and I didn't go to church. So this is nothing new, just a new target.

"Any erudite wiccan conservatives out there care to set me straight?"

Most of us have already deserted this forum.

The kids probably knew about it because Mom was shouting it from the rooftops--typical for someone just coming out of the broom closet.

Wicca is a religion, albeit a self-made one, in many cases. There are "denominations", you might say, which follow traditions and use common rituals, but a large percentage of us take Wicca to be a "some assembly required" religion, and fine-tune it to suit ourselves.

I guess I would consider an alternative lifestyle to be something which a person would be drawn to out of curiosity, be that S&M or joining a biker gang. Wiccan rituals, OTOH, give a religious "high", and a sense of communing with the divine. Even a sense of a higher purpose, and a moral code, of sorts.

Not like there aren't Wiccan nutbags. There are plenty. Just like there are plenty of Christian nutbags.

My impression from a discussion I heard recently is that Wicca is just old-fashioned paganism revived---nature worship. There's a relatively benign form--so-called White Wicca, and another form that is more spiritually dangerous, according to Christians. Interesting to find that there are Wiccans out there who are politically conservative and devout readers of FR.

The concept of "hate-crime" is very Orwellian. I wonder how often it's used to punish crimes against Christians.

Tacoma has never struck me as a place where one would expect to encounter apple tossing gangs of young Christians shouting "Jesus Hater" at Wiccans.

WICCA

A NEOPAGAN, EARTH-CENTERED RELIGION

The Wiccan faith is a nature-based religion and in many ways its ideals make it a close cousin to Native American spirituality. Founded in the 1940s by British civil servant Gerald Gardner, Wicca's components are based on ceremonial magic and seasonal days of celebration.

While Wiccans tend to believe that there is an omnipotent god or goddess that controls the universe, the relationship they have with that deity is much different from that of Christian religions. As opposed to having a god-worshipper relationship, Wiccans believe they have more of a partnership with the god or goddess, one where the deity needs them just as much as they need it.

Often mistaken as being a form of Satanism, Wicca actually does not recognize Satan, an evil deity who actually belongs more in the realm of Christianity and Islam than Wicca. Satanists and Wiccans actually have very different views about God, rules for ethical behavior and entirely different views of the universe.

Since Wiccans are very close with nature and are highly concerned about its preservation, they often prefer to perform their rituals outdoors. Wiccans follow the Wiccan Rede "A'in it harm none, do what thou wilt," meaning that as long as it harms no one, including yourself, one is free to do what one wishes.

Here is why hate crime laws are foolish.

Take the religion issue out of this story, and what have you got? This is just a bunch of kids misbehaving.

The kids just need a little parental discipline. We don't need to make a federal case out of this stuff.

Hate crime laws should be done away, and we should just enforce existing laws more strictly.

Why should punishment be greater for a crime that is motivated by prejudice as opposed to greed, sexual perversion, drug addiction, boredom, or whatever else?

Further, hate crime laws tend to lower the burden of proof standards by creating what is essentially thought crimes. The issue in court becomes whether someone has some prejudice rather than whether they actually committed a crime.

If someone is a member of a hate group, like the KKK, everything they do might be a hate crime. If they cut someone off in traffic, let the door slam in someone's face, etc., it must be a hate crime because they are known haters.

I am not defending racism or other isms, but I know it is just a matter of time before opposing abortion or sodomy will be deemed hate also.

Why is it that liberals have invented so many rights based on privacy, yet intrude into our most private parts - our thoughts and feelings?

wicca is all about buying differnet colored candles and burning them while saying differnet "spells" . It is about collecting crystals and rubbing them. It is about burning incense and pretending like you think there are moon godesses.

It is, a bunch of quack that I participated in when i was 13.

I do not think it is a coincidence that i had a huge spell of bad luck right after that. It was like god was saying, hey silly look at me i am real and that is fake.

I never really believed in it but i liked candles. So in the end i stayed a christian and bought candles and learned to separate religion from cool candles.
