Thought a thread in Breaking News for the weekend covering Hurricane Jeanne would be a good thing. Post your link, pics, updates and freeper check-in's here
Hope everyone is taking this seriously.
Jeanne is gaining strength.
Latest info from the aircraft is showing a pressure dropping and winds rising.
Jeanne IS indeed gaining strength at this hour.
Be safe everyone
My big problem is that I have two big trees north of house. Winds for Charlie and Francess were from SE to NW, so they were a bit protected by house, and had they gone, it would have been into vacant lot. If storm goes east of here, winds could be from N. That not good.
If 11:00 from NHC shows any possibility of storm going east of here, think I'll go to Home Depot and get about 200 feet of 1/2 or 5/8 nylon line, try to secure big trees.
Be safe.
Later
Does your home have a brick foundation? I know in older south Florida homes like that, many times folks would put boxes into the foundation where a brick would be, with valuables, etc in it. Almost like a time capsule/safe deposit box.
LOL I don't know. I used to work there, live between the cmapus and the beach. There are some good shelters around, but I wouldnt stay in any with a flat roof. They need more ICF construction here.
Even worse, there's two 9/25 threads. This one has more posts, though. The other one is here, so consider this a ping to both threads.
Jeanne ping! Thanks to shield and SE Mom for the heads-up on these threads.
This is the old Ivan ping list. I'll use it from now on as an all-purpose Hurricane Ping List. If you want on or off, FReep-mail me.
Watching the discussions and wind-speed predictions, my bets are on a Category 3 landfall and staying a hurricane all the way up into Georgia.
Luckily, Karl's long gone, and unless it pulls a wicked little loop-de-loop (not unlike our current worrisome Jeanne has), Lisa shouldn't pose much trouble.
Only one problem with heading west... Jeanne just might chase them...

>I'm not familiar with the Jewish faith at all. Why wouldn't they know about the hurricane?
No TV, radio. Fasting for the day. A time of quiet reflection.
The ICF homes concept is similar to the site I linked, but leans toward more conventional architecture..
Conventional architecture will, in beach or sandy/soft areas, require conventional pylon placements.. Dome architecture will result in far fewer pylons, reducing building costs..
I see both types, ( reinforced concrete, foam forms ) as viable in such areas..
The great thing is for "wet" areas, total resistance to mold, rot, rust..
I remember watching that. Pretty cool
The owners of the Titan Walls business (2 owners) each live next door to each other on 10 acres in Samsula (New Smyrna Beach, Fl). The eye of Charley and NE quadrant of Frances passed right over them. Each of them live in ICF homes, one of them has a hip roof on his place.
Neither home sustained ANY damage, however...
They have a "pole barn" or storage area next to one of the houses for their supplies that was erected in the past few years, and the barn is made from 14" diameter pressure treated poles, like telephone poles. No siding, so air flows through it easily. But Charley snapped those poles in half - sheared them - like toothpicks. Yet NO damage to either home. And no damage to those Brevard schools. They sold me on it. Holds up to over 200mph winds.
Next place I own, if I can build, will be ICF on elevated land :o)
Citrus Co. here (about 70 miles north of St. Pete's) & no wind or rain yet. Expect to have both tonight. We still have all our tree stuff left from Frances sitting on the curbs waiting for pickup by the county. I can just see my 4 ft x 60 ft pile flying all over the neighborhood. Good Luck to all the Fl people living closer to the east coast or on the east coast.
There is a dome home in the same area that the Titan Walls company is located. Neat looking place. Huge, too.
we here in winter park wish you well. good luck and stay safe
I didn't realize you guys moved so far south.
Please be careful.
My brother is 5 miles from disney world.
I am looking at such a structure for protection against tornadic winds, flying telephone poles, etc..
Also, the insulating properties of the cement - foam construction.. ( keep heating/cooling costs down..)
I think she'll turn north soon and skirt the coast of Florida.
Thanks for the ping to this thread. It is a better thread....now I'm seeing the old timers who always post on the hurricane threads...that helps with my anxiety ;o)THANKS.
It's confusing there are so many threads today on Jeannie girl...so I'm pinging you to this other thread...we need you!!! Help!!!
It's on a brick footer (piers) rather than a slab. I'd never heard that story about putting valuables in the bricks.
